The engineer will contribute to feature development, platform enhancements, and ongoing modernization initiatives while partnering with product and operations teams to deliver reliable, scalable solutions.
We are seeking a .NET Software Engineer to support and enhance one of Markel's policy administration systems, a mission-critical platform used across our Wholesale and Specialty lines of business. This role focuses on building, maintaining, and improving backend services and user-facing components that enable underwriting and policy processing. You will work closely with product, QA, and operations partners to deliver reliable, high-quality solutions in an Agile delivery environment.
Key Responsibilities - Design, develop, and maintain .NET applications and services supporting the underwriting platform
- Implement enhancements, bug fixes, and performance improvements across existing systems
- Collaborate with Product Owners, Business Analysts, QA, and Operations to deliver well-tested solutions
- Participate in code reviews to ensure quality, consistency, and maintainability
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, contributing to root cause analysis and long-term fixes
- Support integration points with downstream systems and services
- Contribute to ongoing platform modernization, technical debt reduction, and improved automation
- Follow established SDLC, security, and compliance standards
Required Qualifications - Strong experience developing applications using C# and .NET (.NET Core or .NET Framework)
- Experience building and supporting web applications and APIs
- Required - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, other related field or equivalent work experience, including military experience
- 3 -5 years of experience
- Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL
- Familiarity with source control, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile development practices
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications - Experience with Angular or other modern frontend frameworks
- Experience supporting large, enterprise-scale applications
- Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
- Experience in insurance, financial services, or other regulated environments
- Familiarity with automated testing practices and performance tuning
