Principal Network Architect

Summary / Purpose
The Technical Expert Network Architecture is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of the organization's network infrastructure. This role leads network architects and engineers to ensure systems are robust, scalable, secure, and aligned to business and technology objectives. The position requires deep expertise in modern networking technologies, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, and business teams.
Position Scope
This role serves as a senior technical leader accountable for the global direction, assessment, and implementation of enterprise network architectures. The position requires exceptional knowledge of Cisco technologies, DNS, shipboard or distributed network systems, and high availability network platforms.
The Technical Expert will work cross functionally with IT leadership, internal teams, vendors, contractors, and executive stakeholders to translate business needs into actionable network solutions. The role manages multiple vendor relationships, oversees contractor resources, and supports financial and operational planning. Success requires broad expertise across network operations, infrastructure platforms, and event driven architectures, along with a strong ability to guide teams executing mission critical network initiatives.
Essential Functions
- Apply deep knowledge of technology delivery components, key systems, and support models relevant to large scale guest facing business platforms. (15%)
- Lead enhancements to VMware virtualization environments, ensuring performance, scalability, and security while maintaining platform best practices. (10%)
- Define and monitor SLOs/SLIs to ensure high reliability, uptime, and proactive incident management. (10%)
- Collaborate with development and infrastructure teams to optimize performance through load testing, capacity planning, and resource utilization. (10%)
- Drive automation initiatives to streamline deployments, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance processes. (10%)
- Lead incident management and root cause analysis, applying structured models such as Five Whys and implementing improvements. (10%)
- Ensure infrastructure security and compliance, working closely with security teams and participating in audits and assessments. (10%)
- Stay current with emerging technologies and drive operational efficiency through innovation and process improvement. (5%)
Other Functions
- Mentor and develop SRE and network engineering talent, fostering collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Recommend adoption of new technologies supporting architecture, operations, and experience delivery.
- Establish architecture committees or technical workgroups when required to support major initiatives.
Decision Making Level
Tactical - Decisions impact intermediate term planning and execution, ensuring alignment to broader strategic goals and enabling the implementation of executive level initiatives.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field (Master's preferred).
Experience
- 10+ years in network architecture, design, and implementation.
- 5+ years in a leadership or senior technical role.
- Deep understanding of network protocols: TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VLANs, VPNs, SD WAN, etc.
- Experience in cloud networking (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform).
- Expertise in network virtualization, SDN, and modern enterprise networking patterns.
- Strong background in network security: firewalls, IDS/IPS, NAC.
- Experience managing vendors, service providers, and contractor teams.
- Relevant certifications preferred (CCIE, CISSP, AWS Solutions Architect, etc.).

- Network Architecture Design: Ability to design end to end enterprise network architectures across LAN/WAN, data center, cloud, and hybrid environments.
- Technology Evaluation: Skill in assessing emerging technologies and selecting platforms that align with business needs.
- Performance & Scalability Optimization: Ability to build networks that support current and future scale requirements.
- Security & Compliance: Strong understanding of secure network design and compliance frameworks.
- Leadership: Proven ability to mentor and lead technical teams; strong cross functional collaboration skills.
- Vendor Management: Experience negotiating contracts, managing SLAs, and overseeing third party performance.
- Risk Management: Ability to identify vulnerabilities and develop mitigation strategies to reduce operational and security risks.
- Communication: Strong verbal/written communication skills; able to present to senior leadership.
