AV Field Technician (Patient Simulator Technology)West Coast (travel-based) Full-time Reports to AV/IMP Supervisor Heavy travel
OverviewJoin a team that equips hospitals, universities, EMS programs, and clinical training centers with high-fidelity simulation environments that help prepare healthcare professionals and ultimately save lives. In this role, you will install, commission, and support patient simulators and the audio-visual systems that power modern medical training. This is a field-based position with extensive travel and daily customer interaction across clinical, academic, and simulation settings.
What You'll Do- Travel to customer facilities to install, configure, and support patient simulators and integrated AV systems.
- Build simulation environments end-to-end: cameras, microphones, speakers, monitors, control stations, and recording systems.
- Install and terminate low-voltage cabling; route wiring, label connections, and integrate AV hardware with simulator equipment.
- Configure, test, and calibrate patient simulators, including sensors, wireless modules, and control software.
- Troubleshoot AV signal flow, network connectivity, simulator hardware faults, and recording/playback issues.
- Interpret wiring diagrams, rack elevations, installation plans, and technical documentation.
- Deliver daily updates to project leadership on progress, site conditions, and customer interactions.
- Provide basic user training for instructors, clinicians, and simulation staff on system operation.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including redlines, cable logs, and as-built records.
- Keep work areas clean and organized in medical, academic, and simulation environments.
- Support remote troubleshooting and escalations as needed.
- Coordinate travel logistics aligned with project schedules and site readiness.
Travel and Work EnvironmentThis is a heavy-travel role that requires frequent flights and extended time on customer sites across the West Coast and beyond. You will work in active job sites and clinical environments, occasionally outside normal business hours to meet go-live or training timelines.
Required Qualifications- Two or more years in AV installation, field service, or simulation-technology support.
- Strong understanding of professional AV systems: cameras, microphones, DSPs, control interfaces, and recording platforms.
- Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and construction documents.
- Proficiency with low-voltage cabling, terminations, labeling, and documentation standards.
- Proven troubleshooting across AV signal flow, IP networking fundamentals, and simulator hardware.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills with clinicians, educators, and technical staff.
- Ability to travel up to 90-100 percent.
- Residence on the West Coast, valid driver's license, and eligibility to meet medical-facility credentialing.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work safely on ladders, lifts, and active job sites.
- Self-motivated, organized, and adaptable to changing project needs.
Preferred Experience- Familiarity with patient simulators and ecosystems (Laerdal, CAE, Gaumard) and how AV integrates with simulator control, sensors, and recording.
- Experience with networked AV concepts such as Dante, HDBaseT, and basic VLAN purpose and segmentation for AV traffic.
- Hands-on exposure to the types of devices commonly found in simulation spaces, such as AXIS PTZ and fixed cameras, HDMI encoders, Dante-enabled DSPs and amplifiers, headphone stations, ceiling and pillow speakers, and paging/voice devices.
Key Competencies- Technical Mastery of AV Systems
- You are the technical adult in the room. You read AV drawings confidently, understand networked AV basics (including Dante, HDBaseT, and VLAN purpose), have practical DSP/configuration knowledge, execute clean and correct terminations, and can stand up hardware quickly while diagnosing issues under time pressure.
- Construction Coordination and Trade Integration
- You navigate the world like a second language-sequencing work with general contractors, electricians, framing/drywall, millwork, and IT. You verify blocking, power, conduit, and backboxes before arrival, prevent rework by other trades, negotiate space/timing/access on crowded sites, and understand construction language, expectations, and site politics.
- Project Execution and Documentation Discipline
- You keep projects visible, predictable, and clean. You write daily reports that tell the story, capture accurate redlines as issues are found, produce punch lists with clarity, escalate scope/sequence risks early, track deliverables and milestones, and ensure zero surprises for PMs or clients.
Tools and Technologies You May TouchWhile toolsets vary by site, many simulation deployments leverage a mix like the following:
- AXIS PTZ and fixed IP cameras used for capture and observation (for example, M5526-E, M5074, P3265-LVE, and P1245 models).
- J-Tech Digital HDMI encoders for video ingest and streaming into recording platforms.
- Symetrix Prism 4x4 DSPs for routing and processing, often in Dante environments.
- Stewart Audio amplifiers for room and hallway paging, including compact Dante-enabled models.
- Atlas ceiling speakers, JBL pillow speakers, and RDL stations for role-player or instructor monitoring.
These examples reflect common components in medical simulation AV stacks and help illustrate the kinds of systems you'll integrate and support.
Success Looks LikeIn your first months, you are independently executing site installs with minimal oversight, producing crisp daily updates and as-builts, collaborating smoothly with trades, and earning trust from instructors and clinical staff by making complex systems uncomplicated to use.
Why This Role MattersEvery reliable camera feed, every clear audio capture, and every well-configured simulator scenario contributes to better training outcomes-and that can translate to better clinical decisions when it counts.
How to ApplyIf you thrive on travel, hands-on builds, and mission-driven technology, we'd love to connect. Share your resume and a brief note on recent AV install work you've led or supported, including any networked AV or simulation-specific experience.Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Los Angeles, CA.
