The Office of Technology Management (OTM) at the University of Illinois in Chicago is seeking a highly motivated professional to serve as an Associate Technology Manager. The position is responsible for evaluating and managing invention disclosures, developing licensing strategies, conducting outreach to industry and other individuals to successfully commercialize University owned intellectual property, and negotiation of license agreement terms. Responsibilities also include maintaining a close working relationship with other OTM and campus staff to fulfill the obligations of federal compliance, IP protection, and related needs.Candidates should have a deep understanding of early-stage technology evaluation and marketing needs, IP strategy, and the ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with faculty inventors and corporate representatives to build a pipeline of disclosures and business development opportunities. In particular, the Office is seeking a qualified candidate with a scientific engineering background.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Develop and manage strong relationships with student, post-doc, staff and faculty inventors as well as prospective inventors with a focus in the engineering field to support the UIC College of Engineering inventors with a focus in clean energy, additive manufacturing for biotech applications, and technology commercialization across physical sciences and engineering.
- Provide specialized advice and counsel on technology commercialization including disclosing inventions, screening and evaluation, intellectual property, licensing, etc.
- Performlicensing responsibilities, including: evaluate and screen disclosures inengineering and physical sciences; identify and qualify licensees; assist withmarketing strategies and plans; draft business terms for license agreements;negotiate and execute license agreements; and management of portfolio oftechnologies in engineering and physical sciences including highly complextechnologies and issues
- Perform marketing responsibilities, including: independent development of and execution of marketing strategies and plans; build and manage strong industry relationships; and promote technology associated sponsored research relationships.
- Develop and deliver an annual Action Plan to maintain effective relationships with inventors to
enhancethe disclosure pipeline for engineering and physical sciences and withlicensees for marketing of technologies. - Develop an annual Professional Development & Improvement Plan.
- Actively plan and participate in conferences and seminars conducted by the University, Unit, or professional organizations.
- Represent the Unit at a variety of meetings in engineering, clean energy, additive manufacturing for biotech applications, and related industries involving International, National, University, State and local government officials and Industry representatives.
- Oversee programs to further advance and promote innovation at UIC.
- Provide assistance to the Director, OTM, on matters as needed
- Lead or work with OTM staff to improve and maintain procedures for administrative efficiency, develop internal forms and systems as needed.
- Evaluate and screen invention disclosure reports in engineering and physical sciences for the University's strategic partners, in collaboration with such institution's technology transfer team.
- Develop and manage strong relationships with University engineering startups, to promote and support commercialization of University technologies and economic development.
- Strengthen relationships within the innovation ecosystem, both internally and externally for increased interaction among the parties.Interface with senior executives and decision makers in various industries to identify potential partnerships.
- When required, serve on search committees for open positions within the Unit.
- Work as an integral part of a team contributing to the on-going evolution of UIC OTM in its mission of commercializing University intellectual property and enhancing economic development.
- Represent the Office of Technology Management in periodic meetings with engineering and physical sciences academic research departments, including the College of Engineering and specifically the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Computer Sciences, and related departments.
QUALIFICATIONS Required:
- BS or BTech in Mechanical Engineering.
- Master's, Ph.D, J.D., M.D., or professional degree in an engineering field such as Mechanical or Civil Engineering
- Professional experience and accomplishments in academic technology transfer
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE Required:
- Minimum (three) 3 years relevant professional experience in business, academic, or government, including the evaluation, commercialization, marketing, and licensing of technologies.
- Technical background in a research area aligned with the technology portfolio in mechanical engineering and physical sciences.
- Licensing and technology marketing or related experience may be considered in lieu of advanced degree requirement and technical requirement.
- Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement and discretion.
- Demonstrated teamwork skills in a highly complex business environment.
- Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal skills.
- Good decision-making and negotiating skills necessary to execute confidentiality and license agreements.
- Strong working knowledge of intellectual property law and industry-standard licenses, including royalty rates and license structures including knowledge of NPV models and data-driven valuation.
- Ability to relate to and work with support staff, pre-professional staff and student interns.
- Ability to maintain strong relationships with faculty inventors and prospective inventors.
- Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with faculty inventors and prospective creators.
- Ability to develop and maintain strong industry client relationships, including indentification of industrial partners with the correct technical fit for licensing.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION This is a Full Time academic professional position. The expected start date is as soon as possible after July 16, 2026. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position.
The budgeted salary range for the position is $85,000.00 - 95,000.00. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
