Incident Handler-Information Security Specialist II
Boston, MA
Position Description:
The Manager, AI & Research Computing Initiatives leads Information Services & Technology's (IS&T) strategy and planning for artificial intelligence in research computing within Research Computing Services (RCS), while coordinating the facilitation, technology, and infrastructure support that RCS provides to researchers. The Manager is responsible for anticipating how AI is reshaping research computing demand — compute patterns, data pipelines, and model-serving needs — and for developing the plans and partnerships required to meet that demand as it arrives. The role sets and drives the technical roadmap for AI-enabled research computing, serves as the primary technical bridge between IS&T and the academic and research community, and functions as IS&T's internal center of expertise on AI infrastructure.
The Manager also provides daily coordination of incident reports, service requests, and researcher project activities within RCS, including coordination as needed with other groups across Infrastructure and other IS&T teams. The Manager supervises a team executing this work day-to-day while partnering with research computing leadership on the broader research computing strategy, specifically representing the AI/ML dimension. Working directly with faculty, research computing champions, and grant-funded labs to assess needs and recommend solutions as a representative of the Research Computing team, the Manager oversees operational reporting, training and documentation coordination, and business process analysis, and positions to compete for and support AI-intensive grant funding
Essential Functions:
30% — AI research computing strategy, roadmap, and expertise. Set and drive the technical roadmap for AI-enabled research computing, including GPU/accelerator capacity planning, containerized and AI workflows, and MLOps tooling for researchers. Anticipate emerging compute, data-pipeline, and model-serving needs and translate them into infrastructure plans. Serve as IS&T's internal resource on AI infrastructure, providing guidance to other IS&T groups so that expertise is developed and shared centrally. Partner with research computing leadership on the broader research computing strategy, representing the AI/ML dimension, and stay current on relevant technologies, standards, and best practices in AI and automation, communicating key changes to stakeholders at BU.
20% — Project and service coordination. Coordinate RCS staff daily work on research projects, including providing reports to RCS Directors on incident management and service request fulfillment. Follow up with RCS leadership on client requests and incidents at risk of becoming overdue, and coordinate across IS&T on RCS involvement in research projects, especially but not exclusively those related to AI, ensuring that the necessary support and engagement are in place from technical units and research groups.
20% — Team leadership and people management. Supervise, mentor, and develop the team executing this work: set priorities and workload, manage service delivery, and support performance management, professional development, hiring, and onboarding.
15% — Operational reporting and business process analysis. Create annual, monthly, and ad hoc resource reports on system utilization, storage services, buy-in utilization, and other metrics needed by RCS Directors for operational oversight, purchasing decisions, and strategic planning. Provide business process analysis to develop research project workflows, especially for large projects hosted on the Secure Research Enclaves or other regulated research systems, and engage as needed with RCS Operations on chargeback and service models.
15% — Training and documentation coordination. Coordinate both academic and non-academic training provided by RCS staff, including synchronous and asynchronous training, and work with the research facilitation team to record video tutorials. Coordinate and manage documentation updates on the RCS TechWeb pages and other RCS documentation sources.
