Summary
Title: Networking - Route & Switch (R&S) Engineer
Location: Remote
Duration: 05 Months Contract
Position Overview:
Seeking a senior-level Route and Switch Engineer to support a core network migration initiative. This engineer will prepare, configure, migrate, and validate routing and switching services as production traffic transitions to a new high-speed core. Detailed feature-level commitments and priorities will be defined during the upcoming Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) Program Increment (PI) Planning cycle and managed through the normal project planning process.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare and configure new core routing and switching platforms to support migration to the new high-speed core.
- Configure Layer 2 services on the new platforms, including virtual local area networks (VLANs), trunking, port-channels, virtual PortChannels (vPCs) or equivalent technologies, spanning tree, and interface configurations.
- Configure Layer 3 services on the new platforms, including switched virtual interfaces (SVIs), virtual routing and forwarding instances (VRFs), static routes, and dynamic routing protocols such as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP).
- Configure route policies and redistribution, first-hop redundancy such as Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) and Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), and multicast where applicable.
- Migrate and validate existing configurations, including access control lists (ACLs), Quality of Service (QoS) policies, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) relay, and device management settings such as Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA), Network Time Protocol (NTP), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and logging.
- Develop and document production traffic migration and cutover strategies.
- Implement production routing and switching changes required to transition services onto the new high-speed core.
- Execute production traffic migration activities and associated cutovers.
- Validate network, internet, security, and application connectivity following migration activities, including routing adjacencies, route tables, and Layer 2 forwarding state.
- Troubleshoot and remediate issues encountered during migration and stabilization.
- Provide implementation support, coordination, and change management support for route and switch migration activities.
- Document migration outcomes, operational changes, and final-state architecture.
Qualifications:
- Senior-level experience designing, configuring, migrating, and supporting enterprise routing and switching environments.
- Advanced hands-on knowledge of Layer 2 technologies, including VLANs, trunking, port-channels, vPC or equivalent technologies, spanning tree, and interface configuration.
- Advanced hands-on knowledge of Layer 3 technologies, including SVIs, VRFs, static routing, OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, route policies, and route redistribution.
- Experience implementing and supporting HSRP, VRRP, multicast, ACLs, QoS, DHCP relay, AAA, NTP, SNMP, and logging.
- Experience developing and executing production network migration and cutover plans within formal change management processes.
- Strong troubleshooting, documentation, written communication, and cross-functional coordination skills.
- Experience working within SAFe or another Agile delivery framework is preferred.
Tools and Technologies:
- Enterprise core routing and switching platforms
- VLANs, trunking, spanning tree, port-channels, and vPC or equivalent technologies
- SVIs, VRFs, static routing, OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP
- Route policies, route redistribution, HSRP, VRRP, and multicast
- ACLs, QoS, DHCP relay, AAA, NTP, SNMP, and logging
- Network monitoring, troubleshooting, change management, and implementation documentation tools
- SAFe and Agile planning processes
