Job DetailsWe are seeking a Control Systems Design Engineer to lead the design and development of electrical control systems for custom automation machinery. This role will be responsible for creating system architectures, electrical schematics, and ensuring all designs meet industry standards and customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of electrical control systems for automation equipment
- Develop system architectures, electrical schematics, and detailed designs
- Create and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs) and specify components including:
o PLCs
o HMIs
o Motion controllers
o Safety devices
o Power distribution systems
o Industrial networking hardware
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations (NEC, NFPA, ANSI, RIA, UL, etc.)
- Serve as a technical lead during project kickoff and execution
- Collaborate with assembly technicians and panel shop teams to support build and wiring phases
- Support testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and startup (in-house and on-site)
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Mentor and guide junior control engineers
- Maintain and manage electrical libraries, symbols, templates, and design standards
- Establish and enforce drawing standards, naming conventions, and revision control
Technical Qualifications
- Strong experience with PLC systems (Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens required)
- Experience with HMI, motion control, robotics, and vision systems
- Proficiency with SOLIDWORKS Electrical (schematic and/or 3D)
- Strong understanding of industrial control system architecture and networking
- Experience selecting and integrating sensors, control devices, and automation components
- Knowledge of safety-rated control systems and risk assessments
- Familiarity with UL508A, NFPA 79, ISO, CE, NEC standards
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years of experience in control systems design and automation engineering
- Experience working in custom machinery or industrial automation environments
