Description
We are looking for a Software Engineer with strong AI-enabled development experience to support the clients System Replacement Product Delivery Team. This team is delivering real-time, safety-critical systems that support national air traffic operations for the United Kingdom. You will contribute to modernizing a high-availability air traffic management platform using both traditional software engineering practices and cutting-edge AI-augmented development techniques.
This role will involve designing, developing, testing, and optimizing software that directly impacts air traffic safety and system reliability. You will work both independently and collaboratively, influencing technical strategy, reviewing the work of peers, and driving high-quality solutions across the SDLC.
Key Responsibilities:
Design, develop, test, and maintain software for real-time, high-availability systems.
Apply AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, refactoring, debugging, and automated test generation.
Use AI responsibly across the full SDLC, including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, documentation, and code reviews.
Analyze complex system requirements and translate them into efficient, maintainable technical designs.
Develop and maintain automation scripts across development, test, and production environments.
Troubleshoot and debug software issues in multi-threaded, real-time environments.
Promote code quality, reuse, traceability, and cross-team collaboration.
Collaborate with internal project teams and stakeholders to shape solution design and engineering approaches.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with 4+ years of relevant experience, or Master's degree with 2+ years of experience
Strong object-oriented programming experience
Proficiency in C, C++, and/or Ada (Ada preferred but not required)
Experience developing real-time, multi-threaded systems
Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Gemini Code Assist)
Hands-on experience with AI-generated code review, debugging, refactoring, and automated test creation
Familiarity with large language model platforms (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, etc.)
Experience designing prompts and validating AI-generated output
Understanding of responsible AI usage and human-in-the-loop workflows
Ability to evaluate AI outputs for correctness, safety, performance, and bias
Experience with automated testing frameworks
Familiarity with Linux (Red Hat), virtual machines, and hypervisors
Experience with low-level communications protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, SCTP)
Experience with hardware or complex system integration
Experience with source control and configuration management tools
Strong communication skills and ability to work independently
Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust (U.S. Citizenship required).
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience applying AI/ML techniques within software engineering workflows
Experience developing safety-critical or high-availability systems
Experience supporting full SDLC activities in regulated or mission-critical environments
Background in air traffic management systems, aviation, aerospace, or defense programs
Experience with automation scripting across development, test, and production environments.
