Linux System Administrator

Job Summary

The Linux System Administrator is responsible for managing, maintaining, and securing Linux-based systems across private and public cloud environments. This role involves applying industry best practices to resolve complex technical issues, administering multiple Linux distributions, and ensuring high availability, performance, and security of computing infrastructure. The administrator collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver secure and reliable IT services to county stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer and manage Linux systems including:
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Ubuntu, CentOS, SUSE, and Debian
• Provide daily operational support for Linux server instances across cloud and on-prem environments
• Manage infrastructure across public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform) and private cloud
• Monitor system performance, conduct tuning, and implement proactive capacity planning
• Perform advanced troubleshooting and resolve complex operating system issues
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and system configurations
• Design and implement patch management strategies:
  • Patch planning, testing, and deployment
  • Vulnerability assessment and remediation
• Ensure compliance with security policies and implement best practices for system hardening
• Manage availability of network, storage, computing, and software systems
• Execute and manage system changes during maintenance windows in a 247 environment
• Support data center operations while maintaining strict security protocols
• Conduct cost/benefit analysis and evaluate new technologies
• Collaborate with developers, engineers, cybersecurity teams, and operations staff

• Containerization & Orchestration: Kubernetes, OpenShift
• Automation & Scripting: Ansible, Shell scripting, Python
• Virtualization: VMware, vCenter, ESXi
• Security Tools: McAfee, Cisco AMP, Nessus (Tenable), Tanium, Dell Secureworks Red Cloak
• Monitoring & Performance: System monitoring, alerting, and tuning tools

Additional Skills

• Expertise in Kubernetes cluster monitoring, tuning, and maintenance
• Knowledge of OpenShift in both on-prem and cloud environments
• Project management capabilities
• Ability to automate complex operational tasks

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 7 years of experience with Linux systems (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, SUSE, Debian)
• At least 4 years of experience in:
  • Ansible automation
  • Shell scripting
  • Python scripting
• Proven experience implementing automation for complex system administration tasks
• Hands-on experience with security tools and threat mitigation technologies
• Experience with VMware virtualization platforms

Education Requirements

• Bachelor s degree in IT, Engineering, or a related field
• Equivalent work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis

Work Environment & Additional Information

• Work Model: Onsite only
• Work Requirements:
  • Must be available during election coverage and preparation periods
  • Work may involve extended hours during critical election cycles
• Environment: 247 operations with on-call responsibilities
