Job Title: Mid-Level Embedded Software Engineer
Location: Mayfield Heights, OH (Hybrid (Onsite Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday)
Employment Type: 2 4 Year Contract
Team Responsibilities
Engineers on this team work at the lowest levels of the software stack and are responsible for:
- Device drivers
- RTOS development and configuration
- Memory management
- Platform-level software development
- Hardware abstraction layers
- Embedded controller functionality
- Unit testing and code quality
- Architecture and design participation
The team develops software that powers Client Automation products used across industries including:
- Manufacturing
- Food & Beverage
- Healthcare
- Oil & Gas
Note: This team does not support robotics or motion-control development.
Agile Environment
- SAFe Agile Framework
- Two-week sprint cycles
- Daily standups
- Sprint planning sessions
- Bi-weekly retrospectives
Why the Opening Exists
This is a backfill position replacing a previous employee.
The prior individual struggled with the embedded systems aspects of the role, relied heavily on AI-generated code, and was unable to independently execute embedded software development work at the level required by the team. The hiring manager is seeking a candidate with strong foundational embedded engineering experience who can contribute independently.
Team Structure
Embedded Software Teams
- Team 1: 8 Engineers (Current Opening)
- Team 2: 7 Engineers
- Team 3: 7 Engineers
Contractor Presence
- Approximately 2 contractors per team
- Contractors work directly alongside full-time employees
Supporting Organizations
- Hardware Engineering is a separate organization
- No dedicated QA/testing team
- Two Scrum Masters currently support all three teams
- Third Scrum Master is being added
Core Responsibilities
- Design and develop embedded software solutions
- Build platform-level functionality
- Work directly with hardware and embedded systems
- Participate in software architecture and design discussions
- Write unit tests and validate code quality
- Conduct code reviews
- Participate in Agile ceremonies
- Contribute to long-term SDA product development initiatives
This is 100% new development work and not maintenance support. Engineers will have significant ownership and influence over product design and technical direction.
Required Qualifications
RTOS Expertise
- Strong real-time operating system experience
- Current environment utilizes QNX RTOS
- Ability to explain RTOS concepts and tradeoffs
Embedded Architecture Experience
Development experience on:
- ARM platforms
- Intel/x86 platforms
C++ Development
- Strong proficiency with modern C++
- Ability to develop production-quality embedded software
Low-Level Embedded Development
- Device-level programming
- Hardware interaction
- Platform development
- Memory management
- Driver development
Hardware Exposure
Strong preference for candidates who have developed software across multiple hardware platforms, such as:
- Raspberry Pi
- Proprietary embedded devices
- Industrial control systems
- Embedded controller platforms
Testing Mindset
Candidates should be comfortable:
- Writing unit tests
- Testing their own code
- Participating in code reviews
