Overview

We are seeking a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area on our Automotive OEM team. In this role, you will provide advanced engineering expertise and project leadership for the development of mechanical and electromechanical solutions used in next-generation automotive infotainment and vehicle electronics systems.

What does Garmin AOEM do?

Garmin designs and manufactures innovative infotainment and related vehicle electronics for global Automotive OEM customers including BMW, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, and others. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge automotive technologies in a collaborative, customer-facing engineering environment.

Essential Functions
  • Lead the mechanical design and development of automotive electronic assemblies and electromechanical systems from concept through production
  • Design moderately to highly complex mechanical components and assemblies with a focus on reliability, manufacturability, and performance
  • Knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, material requirements, material performance, material limitations, etc.
  • Manage basic tradeoffs, determine risk mitigation plans, determine project goal/objective feasibility, provide technical input to product development plans/concept documents, and drive process vendors to evaluate complex mechanical designs and understand risk
  • Lead explorations of new technologies and make estimates on moderately complex mechanical designs including: tooling, part cost, and design time
  • Lead the mechanical design and development of automotive electronic assemblies and electromechanical systems from concept through production
  • Drive design reviews, tolerance analysis, and root-cause investigations for product and manufacturing issues
  • Provide reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques and offer process improvements and author new procedures
  • Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing partners to optimize component fabrication and assembly processes
  • Interface with OEM customers and external partners to support technical discussions and product development activities as needed

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and capability using CATIA
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes including die casting, sheet metal stamping, injection molding, machining, and related fabrication methods

Desired Qualifications
  • Mechanical design experience in the automotive industry
  • Thermal design experience for electronics including integration of fans, heat sinks, vapor chambers, and liquid cold plates
  • Experience with electronic packaging design
  • Previous experience working directly with external customers or OEM partners
  • Proficiency in interpretation and application of GD&T principles
  • Expert-level CAD Proficiency with CATIA
  • CAD proficiency with Solidworks or Onshape
