Role Overview:
We are seeking a seasoned Utility Industry QA Tester with deep expertise in billing operations and orchestration for electric and/or gas utilities to join our utility consulting practice to engage with our Fortune 500 clients on large-scale Customer Information Systems (CIS) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) transformation projects. The consultant will act as a Billing QA Expert on major Customer Information System (CIS) replacement and modernization initiatives, serving as liaison between the utility’s billing business unit and the CIS/CRM software vendor and implementation partners.
The ideal candidate will bring comprehensive knowledge and hands-on testing experience of end-to-end utility billing processes, including multi-service billing, billing orchestration, and the key decision points that determine billing readiness. Knowledge and experience particularly with newer CIS systems such as Oracle CC&B, SAP (IS-U or S/4), web-based customer platforms, or modern billing engines is required and experience with Kraken is a plus. The consultant will lead efforts with selected clients to perform Quality Assurance Testing to ensure and validate that the new CIS/CRM solution fully supports all required billing functions.
Key Responsibilities:
• Execute system integration testing (SIT) and user acceptance testing (UAT) for billing functions across CIS/CRM transformation initiatives.
• Develop detailed test plans, test scenarios, test scripts, and test data for complex billing processes.
• Validate end-to-end billing workflows including multi-service billing, billing orchestration, rate application, adjustments, exceptions, and bill readiness.
• Test event sequencing, triggers, and dependencies across accounts, meters, service orders, usage reads, AMI/MDM integrations, and financial postings.
• Ensure correct processing of:
o Usage reads (actual/estimated)
o Service order/field activity completion
o Adjustments, credits, exceptions
o Rate/proration logic
o Billing holds/disputes
• Review functionality in new CIS systems to confirm it meets legacy and future-state billing requirements.
• Collaborate with business users, product owners, and vendors to clarify requirements, resolve defects, and support iterative testing cycles.
• Identify defects, log them in Jira or similar tools, and track them through remediation.
• Validate multi-service billing (electric, gas, water), consolidated billing, and compliance with tariff and regulatory rules.
• Support go-live readiness through regression testing, cutover validation, and post-deployment stabilization.
Required Skills:
• 5–8+ years of QA testing experience in the utility industry (electric or gas preferred).
• Experience with hands-on testing of end-to-end Billing functions in one or more of the following Utility Industry CIS platforms:
- Oracle CC&B
- SAP IS-U or SAP S/4 Utilities
- Banner, Cayenta, or similar web-based customer utility systems
• Strong understanding of utility billing workflows, billing orchestration, rate configuration, proration, adjustments, and exception handling.
• Experience testing web-based customer platforms/portals, API integrations, and meter-to-cash processes.
• Ability to create well-structured test plans, scripts, traceability matrices, and defect documentation.
• Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, HP ALM, or Rally.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to validate complex end-to-end business scenarios.
• Bachelor’s degree in IT, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with Kraken or other next-generation CIS/billing platforms.
• Knowledge of AMI/MDM, usage processing, estimation logic, and meter-to-cash flows.
• Exposure to Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid project methodologies.
• Experience with multi-commodity billing or customer segmentation.
• Prior consulting experience is a plus.
