CNC Programmer
This technical leadership role supports production in the CNC work area, with a focus on quality, safety, and continuous improvement. The individual will work closely with supervisors and managers to help implement operational initiatives and provide guidance to the hourly workforce, without holding formal supervisory or disciplinary responsibility. Duties include programming from engineered drawings and setting up and operating CNC turning and milling machines. The role also involves inspecting parts using precision measuring tools, making process adjustments, and maintaining inspection and labor records. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills are essential to support complex machining processes and uphold high manufacturing standards.
Responsibilities
- Resolve day-to-day production issues to meet safety, quality, shipping, and customer delivery goals.
- Execute scheduled work orders and adjust priorities as needed to ensure completion of customer requirements.
- Support management initiatives by maintaining accountability for management boards, inventory records, and action items.
- Partner with Quality and Technical Services to resolve quality concerns, including customer claims and corrective actions.
- Support the development and implementation of new processes and continuous improvement efforts.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment by identifying hazards, eliminating risks, reporting incidents, and ensuring that required safety training is completed.
- Plan machining work using operation travelers, prints, and instructions; select proper tools, materials, setups, and efficient machining methods.
- Set up and operate CNC turning and milling machines, including installing tooling, loading programs, and optimizing feeds, speeds, sequences, and depth of cuts.
- Properly load, fixture, center, and secure parts for machining operations.
- Monitor machine performance, inspect tooling, verify program accuracy, troubleshoot malfunctions, and make adjustments to maintain process control.
- Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, verniers, thread/plug gauges, etc.) to ensure parts meet specifications.
- Operate multiple machines simultaneously as required and report damaged or worn tooling to the Supervisor.
- Move materials and completed parts using cranes, dollies, and carts, and ensure tooling and point-of-use items are stored in an organized, labeled manner.
- Perform routine machine maintenance and cleaning to ensure equipment remains in optimal working condition.
- Carry out all job functions in accordance with established procedures and complete additional duties as directed by the Supervisor.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 2–5 years of experience programming, setting up, and operating CNC machining centers and lathes in a manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in G-Code programming with familiarity in CAM software (MasterCAM preferred); experience with HAAS, FANUC, or Doosan controls is a plus.
- Ability to interpret blueprints, technical drawings, CAD files, and operation travelers; CAD design experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of machining methods, tooling, and precision measuring instruments.
- Proven troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills, with familiarity in lean manufacturing practices.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent setups, both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and safely operate forklifts/hoists (certification required or obtainable).
