Job#: 3021840 Job Description: Position SummaryThe Senior Legacy Systems Engineer will serve as the enterprise expert for critical legacy platforms including OpenVMS, CorVision, TOLAS, RDB, WMS, and associated operational tools. This role replaces the combined responsibilities of retiring subject-matter experts and ensures continuity of operations across dealer systems, distribution centers, and enterprise accounting processes.
The position requires deep technical skills in legacy systems, strong operational reliability discipline, and the ability to provide leadership, documentation, and cross-functional support during the organization's multi-year modernization transition.
Key ResponsibilitiesOpenVMS / Legacy Platform Ownership- Serve as SME for OpenVMS, including system operations, scripting (DCL), and legacy application support.
- Support and maintain applications written in C, CorVision and HP Basic.
- Maintain and enhance enterprise interfaces and processes connected to TOLAS - Transcomm Online Accounting System.
- Execute and monitor job scheduling via Control-M or equivalent scheduling tools.
Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) Oversight- Perform daily WMS monitoring including Avalanche server checks to confirm nightly processing completion; rerun processes as required.
- Manage exceptions that require data adjustments or purges in MS Access-based support tools (rare but possible).
- Provide off-hours WMS support during change control windows (until WMS migration to Manhattan completes).
Database & Application Support- Support systems utilizing RDB (OpenVMS), Oracle SQL, and legacy data integrations.
- Troubleshoot DIA (Clients Retail Inventory Management System) and other OpenVMS-based applications used by dealer systems teams.
Team & Operational Leadership- Function as technical lead for the OpenVMS and legacy environments, assuming responsibilities previously held by senior team members.
- Provide backup coverage for TOLAS access and related operational tasks traditionally shared across roles.
- Participate in weekly status meetings, change control cycles, and cross-functional coordination.
Documentation & Knowledge Retention- Maintain and expand the existing documentation repository, ensuring all operational, recovery, and support procedures are up to date. (Critical due to prior knowledge-loss risks. )
- Provide training, cross-skilling, and mentoring to junior staff to reduce single-point-of-failure risk.
Modernization Participation- Assist in transition activities as systems migrate away from OpenVMS and TOLAS toward modern, cloud-aligned platforms.
- Support data migration and process mapping efforts in partnership with modernization teams.
Required Qualifications- 7+ years of experience supporting OpenVMS environments.
- Hands-on experience with DCL scripting, CorVision, C, HP Basic, and legacy business logic.
- Familiarity with TOLAS or comparable mainframe/legacy accounting platforms.
- Strong SQL experience in Oracle or RDB.
- Experience monitoring and supporting operational systems such as WMS or other batch-driven distribution systems.
- Ability to manage complex production workloads with high reliability and low tolerance for downtime.
- Strong documentation, communication, and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience in large enterprise or distribution/warehouse environments.
- Background in modernization projects involving system decommissioning or data migration.
- Familiarity with MS Access for light data fixes or troubleshooting tasks.
- Ability to serve as a technical mentor or lead.
