Summary

Position Overview

The Director of SCADA Engineering leads a team of 15-20 Systems Integration and Automation Engineers and is responsible for overseeing our SCADA systems integration technical implementation activities, particularly focusing on utility scale power production projects (PV Solar and Battery Energy Storage). This role requires cross-functional collaboration with our Project Management, Engineering Design, Technology & Development, IT/OT, Metering, Production, and Field Technician teams.

The SCADA Integration and Automation Engineering team is responsible for integrating real-time Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED's) and computer systems at electric power generation plants, including utility-scale solar power, battery energy storage system (BESS), wind power, hydro-electric, and natural gas. Typical devices include inverters, BESS controllers, RTUs, PLCs, Power Plant Control (PPC) Systems, Energy Management Systems (EMS), data historians, electric power meters and meteorological (MET) data loggers.

An expert understanding of complex SCADA and control systems is required to lead this team. The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated success in supervising a multigenerational team of 15+ employees and overseeing an extensive portfolio of large, medium, and small projects. They will work in close collaboration with our Chief Technology Officer to define SCADA application improvements and enhancements. They will also work closely with the Field and Production Services management team to coordinate delivery and installation of systems.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of managers and engineers responsible for SCADA, automation, and integration activities.
  • Set departmental goals, KPIs, and priorities that align with organizational objectives.
  • Continuously assess the team's skillset and knowledge; develop training plan and curriculum to maximize their potential for growth and career development with Trimark
  • Provide leadership and training to the System Integration department to maintain SCADA best practices and Trimark standards

Project & Technical Oversight
  • Efficiently manage and oversee the Systems Integration Department's project expense and labor budgets, staff utilization, milestone dates aligned with project schedule, and project scope.
  • Effectively lead recruitment activities and resource planning efforts in close coordination with our Human Resources management
  • Manage the configuration, commissioning, and maintenance of SCADA systems, and support CAISO RIGS, MET systems, and network communication device implementation efforts by respective teams
  • Oversee the teams that design, implement, and commission SCADA and control systems for solar and energy storage projects, ensuring they meet performance, cybersecurity, and reliability standards.
  • Ensure that the teams deliver robust integration between field devices, site networks, cloud platforms, and enterprise systems (e.g., Energy Management Systems, Utility SCADA, and ISO/RTO data feeds).
  • Serve as escalation point for technical issues, change requests, and system troubleshooting.

Process Optimization & Standardization
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards, best practices, and documentation protocols for SCADA Automation and Integration systems.
  • Continuously improve workflows for project execution, operational support, and change management.
  • Evaluate and select vendors, third-party solutions, and system architectures.

Stakeholder & Client Engagement
  • Collaborate with internal departments and clients to ensure project success
  • Establish, implement, and manage communication pathways and content
  • Collaborate with business development, project management, and client teams to define system requirements, scope, and deliverables.
  • Represent the organization in technical discussions, industry groups, and client presentations relating to SCADA, controls, and integration solutions.
  • Engage with utility partners, contractors, and regulatory bodies regarding interconnection, communications, and grid compliance.

Candidate Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Technology, or related field.
  • 10+ years professional experience as a SCADA or Systems Integration Engineer in the utility and/or renewable energy sector
  • Minimum 7+ years of progressively responsible relevant supervisory work experience in engineering of power systems, including experience managing large projects and leading of a group of 15+ employees
  • Expert-level understanding of SCADA and Control System factory and site acceptance testing and documentation
  • Comprehensive knowledge of PV solar and/or BESS plant architectures, grid interconnection requirements, and utility controls communications (e.g., DNP3, Modbus, OPC UA, IEC 61850) strongly desired
  • Experience working with Inductive Automation Ignition Vision & Perspective and SEL RTAC strongly desired
  • Experience working with ISO and utilities desired
  • PE certification desired
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Visio and MS Teams
