Summary

Job Description

Digital Workplace (DW) enables all American Express colleagues to do exceptional work in a complex, dynamic, and evolving environment.

You will work within our TechCare Operations: Blueprint team, partnering closely with database engineering, application, and infrastructure teams to ensure the reliability, performance, and security of enterprise database platforms. You will support mission-critical systems and help drive database strategy, standards, and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Support database platforms (e.g., DB2 z/OS, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Netezza) across development, test, and production environments
  • Perform database installation, configuration, patching, and upgrades
  • Monitor database performance and proactively tune queries, indexes, and configurations\
  • Implement and maintain backup, recovery, and high-availability solutions (e.g., replication, clustering)
  • Troubleshoot database-related incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement preventive measures
  • Partner with application and product teams to review database designs and ensure optimal data structures
  • Enforce database security standards, including access controls, encryption, and auditing
  • Automate routine DBA tasks using scripting languages (e.g., Python, Shell, PowerShell)
  • Document database configurations, processes, and operational procedures
  • Support data migrations, releases, and environment refreshes
  • Participate in on-call support rotations and incident response

Qualifications

  • Database Administration Experience: Up to 6 years of professional DBA experience managing platforms such as DB2 z/OS, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or Netezza.
  • Core Database Skills: Strong knowledge of backup/recovery, high availability, disaster recovery, database security, performance tuning, development, and query optimization.
  • Automation & Scripting: Experience with scripting and automation tools such as Shell, Python, or PowerShell.
  • Architecture Knowledge: Understanding of distributed systems, multi-tier architectures, infrastructure components (servers, storage, networking), and database architecture.
  • Database Design & Data Management: Knowledge of data modeling, database design principles, metadata management, indexing strategies, and query optimization techniques.
  • Modern Database Technologies: Familiarity with cloud databases (AWS RDS, Azure SQL), NoSQL databases, big data platforms, data modeling, and database design principles.
  • Monitoring & Troubleshooting: Experience with database monitoring, observability, alerting, troubleshooting tools, and metadata management.
  • Development & Operations Practices: Working knowledge of Agile methodologies, SDLC processes, operational best practices, and ServiceNow data.
  • Problem Solving & Ownership: Ability to proactively identify, analyze, and resolve complex database performance, reliability, and operational issues while driving continuous improvement.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Strong communication skills, effective cross-team collaboration, adaptability, accountability, and commitment to staying current with database technologies and industry trends.
