Summary:

As a Defect Analysis Engineer, you will investigate battery-related quality and safety issues by performing failure analysis, root cause investigations, and reproducibility testing on lithium-ion cells, modules, packs, and Battery Management Systems (BMS). This role supports continuous quality improvement by identifying failure mechanisms, validating corrective actions, and providing technical recommendations to improve product safety, reliability, and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct root cause investigations of battery quality and safety issues through testing, analysis, and on-site verification
  • Perform reproducibility testing to validate suspected failure modes and identify contributing factors
  • Complete tear-down analysis of lithium-ion cells, modules, battery packs, and related components
  • Analyze battery failures using laboratory equipment and diagnostic tools to determine failure mechanisms
  • Evaluate structural and design-related risks affecting battery system performance and safety
  • Investigate customer returns, field failures, buyback samples, and adjacent cell impacts to determine root causes
  • Prepare technical reports documenting findings, conclusions, and corrective action recommendations
  • Develop and maintain work instructions, diagnostic procedures, and technical documentation
  • Support cross-functional teams in implementing corrective and preventive actions to improve product quality
  • Organize and improve laboratory processes, procedures, and documentation to increase efficiency
  • Complete daily documentation and maintain accurate engineering records
  • Follow all safety policies, work instructions, and PPE requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Maintain cleanliness at work-site in accordance with 5S3R Standards:
    • Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain
    • Right Location, Right Quantity, Right Container

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering field
  • Fundamental knowledge of lithium-ion batteries, electrochemistry, and battery systems
  • Understanding of engineering analysis methods and root cause investigation techniques

Experience:

  • 1 to 3+ years of experience, i, in a Quality Engineering role or Reproducible experiment work in an automotive manufacturing environment
  • Experience performing battery failure analysis, laboratory testing, or reproducibility experiments is preferred
  • Experience supporting EV or PHEV battery systems or vehicle diagnostics is preferred

Mandatory requirements:
