Database Architect

Introduction

We are seeking an experienced Database Architect to design, implement, and manage scalable, secure, and high-performance database solutions on AWS and Snowflake. This is a hands-on role supporting a federal agency environment, requiring deep expertise across both relational and NoSQL databases, cloud-native data services, and infrastructure automation. You must be able and willing to work in person in Woodlawn, MD.

Responsibilities

• Architect and manage AWS database services including RDS, AuroraDB, DynamoDB, Redshift, ElastiCache, EMR, and Neptune.
• Design, implement, and manage virtual data warehouses in Snowflake, including schema design and data ingestion pipelines.
• Configure and manage EMR clusters, optimizing performance and cost while integrating with various data sources.
• Integrate databases with AWS services such as Lambda, S3, EC2, and Glue.
• Implement and enforce AWS security best practices including IAM, encryption, VPC, and security groups.
• Design and maintain backup, disaster recovery, high availability, and failover solutions (Multi-AZ, read replicas).
• Write complex SQL queries for data analysis, transformation, and reporting; optimize query and caching performance.
• Ensure compliance with agency security, privacy, and data management policies.
• Provide technical mentorship to junior and mid-level developers and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field (Master’s or Doctorate may substitute for experience).
• 7+ years of experience as a Database Architect.
• Hands-on experience with AWS database and data processing services (RDS, AuroraDB, DynamoDB, Redshift, ElastiCache, EMR, Neptune).
• Strong proficiency in Snowflake – warehousing, micro-partitions, schema design, and BI tool integration (Tableau, Power BI).
• Skilled in relational and NoSQL database management, data modeling, normalization, and schema design.
• Proficiency in automation and scripting using CloudFormation, Terraform, AWS CLI, Python, Bash, and/or PowerShell.
• Experience with AWS monitoring tools (CloudWatch, CloudTrail) and security hardening (IAM, encryption, VPC).
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a US Public Trust clearance.
