Summary

At HR Green, our mission is simple: Building Communities. Improving Lives.

For more than 110 years, we've partnered with municipalities, utilities, and public agencies to deliver infrastructure solutions that strengthen communities and improve quality of life. Today, we're proud to be recognized as one of the nation's leading engineering firms, consistently ranked on Engineering News-Record's Top 500 Design Firms list, while also earning recognition as a Great Place to Work.

We're currently seeking a Lead Transportation Engineer to join our Transportation team in Sioux Falls. This is an opportunity for an experienced roadway and highway engineer to serve as a senior technical leader, take ownership of complex design decisions, mentor developing engineers, and help shape the technical standards and quality of transportation work across the practice.

If you're looking for a role where you can stay close to the engineering while expanding your influence across projects, teams, and clients-and where your technical expertise can make a visible impact-we'd love to talk with you.

What You'll Do

As a Lead Transportation Engineer, you'll provide technical leadership across roadway and highway projects, serving as a trusted resource for complex design challenges and helping teams deliver high-quality work from planning and design through construction.

Technical Leadership & Project Delivery

  • Lead and independently complete complex roadway and highway engineering designs, using professional judgment to make significant technical and design decisions.
  • Serve as a technical expert on assigned projects and provide specialized transportation expertise across teams and offices when needed.
  • Provide formal and informal QA/QC of engineering work to ensure technically sound deliverables that meet client expectations, company standards, schedules, and budgets.
  • Proactively identify technical, scope, schedule, or financial issues and work with project managers and clients to resolve them.
  • Sign and seal engineering documents as an authorized representative of HR Green.
  • Support bidding and construction activities, including contractor questions, addenda, change orders, and field coordination as appropriate.

Team Leadership & Mentorship

  • Provide technical and project leadership to engineers and technical staff by assigning work, answering questions, monitoring progress, and helping teams stay on track.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers and connect them with assignments and resources that expand their technical capabilities and support career development.
  • Help create, improve, and champion transportation design standards, tools, processes, and best practices across the organization.
  • Foster a collaborative environment focused on technical excellence, accountability, knowledge-sharing, and continuous improvement.

Client Partnership & Practice Growth

  • Communicate directly with clients on technical matters and help translate complex engineering challenges into practical solutions.
  • Act as Project Manager on smaller or specialty transportation projects as assigned, with responsibility for scope, schedule, budget, resources, and client expectations.
  • Contribute technical expertise to proposals, project pursuits, client presentations, and business development efforts.
  • Represent HR Green through professional associations, technical organizations, and other industry or community outreach opportunities.

What You Bring

You're an experienced transportation engineer with deep technical knowledge, sound judgment, and a reputation for solving complex problems. You enjoy staying engaged in the technical work while mentoring others, partnering with clients, and influencing how projects are delivered.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Current Professional Engineer (PE) license, with the ability to sign and seal engineering documents.
  • 7+ years of design/engineering experience, including significant highway and/or roadway design experience.
  • Demonstrated specialized transportation engineering expertise and the ability to independently lead technically complex work.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, verbal communication, and technical writing skills.
  • Experience providing technical guidance, QA/QC, and mentorship to engineers and technical staff.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and transportation engineering/design software.

Preferred Qualifications

Highly desirable candidates will bring:

  • Experience with SDDOT transportation projects and design requirements.
  • MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer experience.
  • Project management experience, including scope, schedule, budget, resource coordination, and client communication.
  • Experience supporting proposals, client presentations, business development, or professional/technical associations.
  • Additional transportation-related certifications, specialty expertise, and/or advanced education.
