Primary Purpose

The General Engineer leads and supports engineering efforts across Exelon's utility infrastructure, including electric or gas distribution, transmission, substations, and related systems. This role requires a broad understanding of utility operations and involves developing engineering solutions, managing technical deliverables, and ensuring compliance with internal and regulatory standards.

Work can include: Leading electric, gas, and/or communications system performance evaluations and outage analysis Driving initiatives to enhance safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.

Managing budgeting and cost estimation for engineering projects. Coordinating across departments and with external stakeholders Overseeing field inspections and resolving technical issues May be required to work extended hours for coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.

The Engineering Lab Operations (ELO) team is seeking a General Engineer to support daily operations across ComEd's Smart Grid and REACTS engineering laboratories. This role provides hands-on technical support to ensure safe, reliable, and effective testing of utility equipment and to advance the technology readiness of the Maywood Tech Center facilities, including the GrIT Lab, MOAT outdoor lab, and REACTS Lab, in support of Smart Grid and REACTS technology development.

Primary Duties

  • Performs engineering assignments of moderate complexity, exercising independent judgment under the guidance of experienced engineers (e.g., collect and analyze technical data, interpret results, draw conclusions, and present recommendations to management)
  • Leads small engineering projects or tasks, coordinating with cross-functional teams to ensure technical requirements and standards are met (e.g., analyze and interpret results of power flows, perform engineering tests, and resolve ambiguous findings)
  • Provides technical support and consultation to engineering and operating groups, assisting in the design, installation, and maintenance of systems and equipment (e.g., review and validate studies, blueprints, or designs against accepted engineering principles and practices).
  • Participates in the evaluation and improvement of technical systems and processes, contributing to project planning and implementation, and may assign and review work as needed.
  • Independently performs technical tasks and contributes to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Exelon's utility infrastructure, including electric or gas distribution, transmission, substations, and related systems. This role involves performing engineering studies, technical calculations, specifications, permitting, work packages, and performance evaluations to ensure system safety, reliability, and compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements. Work can include: Analyzing electric, gas, and/or communications system performance and analyzing outage data Identifying and implementing improvements in safety, reliability, and grid performance Supporting cost estimation, budgeting, and integrated system planning
  • Collaborating with engineering, operations, construction, and external partners Conducting field inspections and supporting project execution May be required to work extended hours for coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.
  • Additionally, the position plays a key role in lab safety and asset stewardship by maintaining accurate equipment records in PowerBase, supporting maintenance schedules, ensuring compliance with safety procedures and PPE requirements, supporting IT vulnerability assessments, and providing training to lab users while enforcing established laboratory protocols. Note This position may be required to work extended hours for coverage during storms, technology deployments, or other energy delivery emergencies.

  • Performs engineering tasks associated with large projects or a number of small projects (e.g., analyze and interpret the results of complex power flows and perform complex engineering tests, and analyze non-specific and ambiguous results)
  • May direct the engineering tasks associated with a large project or a number of small projects (e.g., verify and validate studies, blueprints, or designs against accepted engineering principles and practices. Design high voltage transmission and distribution circuits, meeting all engineering standards and criteria)
  • Evaluates effectiveness of current technical systems and processes. Participates on teams (e.g., design high voltage transmission and distribution circuits, meeting all engineering standards and criteria)
  • Supports daily operations of the Smart Grid and REACTS laboratories Collaborates with Engineering, IT, project teams, vendors, and research partners to advance lab initiatives Maintains lab asset records and supports equipment maintenance, safety, cybersecurity, and operational compliance Contributes to technology-readiness assessments, technical documentation, and continuous improvement of lab processes

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Licensed Professional Engineer (2) (3)
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply problem solving approaches and engineering theory
  • Knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of complex field test equipment.
  • 4-7 years of professional engineering experience (1) (3) (See Note).
  • Broad knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes methods, practices, and advanced engineering principles necessary to perform very complex or unique assignments for a specific
  • Minimum of two related career experiences (4) (i.e., changes in technical job responsibilities, which may or may not include a change in department) OR
  • Engineer in Training OR
  • 50% complete (by hours) with advanced technical degree, M.B.A. or Project Management Certification
  • (1) Master's degree in Engineering reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year. (2) License must be issued by the state in which you are practicing. (3) PE License reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year. (4) Career related experiences is defined as changes in technical job responsibilities and does not have to include a change in department Note: Items (1) and (3) are mutually inclusive, whereby the maximum experience requirement reduction is one(1) year (e.g., in the case of an employee with both a master's degree in Engineering AND a PE license, the minimum experience requirement would be reduced by one (1) year).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree (1) or Graduate level work in Engineering, Business Administration or Project Management Certification
  • Possess Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification and/or Professional Engineer license (2) (3)
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with all management levels.
  • Strong written and oral communication/presentation skills, report generation & technical writing skills.
  • A working knowledge of analysis software packages such as CYMDIST, PSS\E, Python, PLS-CAD, Pole Foreman, Power BI, or similar.
  • Interpersonal skills & the ability to collaborate with peers and managers

  • Familiarity with industrial protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, or other utility-related communication standards.
  • Engineer should have basic knowledge of the Doble Powerbase application.
  • Technical experience related to electrical power equipment Electrical troubleshooting experience preferred Ability to coordinate tasks, manage multiple priorities, and maintain attention to detail in a lab or technical setting.
