Pay Rate: $45/hr (Conversion salary target: ~$95k)
OVERVIEW
A large public-sector technology organization is seeking a Senior Cloud Configuration / Release Engineer to join its Application Development & Maintenance organization within a DevOps-focused environment.
This team supports a broad portfolio of enterprise applications and statewide services, operating at scale across multiple agencies and entities. The role focuses on building, automating, and governing AWS cloud infrastructure to ensure secure, reliable, and compliant platforms.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Cloud Configuration / Release Engineer is responsible for designing, automating, and maintaining cloud configuration, release, and infrastructure management processes across AWS environments. This role ensures highly available, secure, compliant, and well-governed cloud platforms through effective automation, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), patch management, backup strategy, and certificate governance.
The engineer will collaborate closely with DevOps, Security, and Infrastructure teams to support stable and reliable enterprise services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Cloud Configuration & Infrastructure Automation
- Develop, implement, and maintain configuration management processes, policies, and standards for AWS environments.
- Build, deploy, and enhance Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using Terraform to automate provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management of AWS resources (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, ACM).
- Manage and optimize multiple environments (Dev, Test, Stage, Prod) to ensure configuration consistency and security.
Release Engineering & AWS DevOps
- Support CI/CD automation pipelines using AWS services such as CodeCommit, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy, and CodePipeline.
- Partner with DevOps teams to support releases, deployments, rollbacks, configuration updates, and environment readiness.
Backup, Patching & Compliance
- Design and maintain automated AWS backup solutions to ensure data integrity, resiliency, and compliance with retention requirements.
- Implement automated patching workflows to maintain security and compliance posture.
- Conduct periodic audits of environment configurations, patch levels, backup integrity, and certificate compliance; recommend and implement improvements.
Security & Certificate Management
- Manage installation, renewal, rotation, and validation of SSL/TLS certificates across AWS services.
- Ensure secure communication configurations aligned with security standards and regulatory requirements.
Documentation, Governance & Enablement
- Maintain detailed documentation for configuration baselines, IaC standards, Terraform modules, and environment changes.
- Provide guidance and knowledge sharing on Terraform, AWS infrastructure best practices, backup strategies, patch automation, and certificate management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field or equivalent professional experience.
- Hands-on configuration management experience, including:
- Proficiency with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code methodologies
- AWS experience (EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, ACM)
- Cloud backup solutions and automated patching
- SSL/TLS certificate management and cloud security best practices
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Scripting experience (Python, Bash, or PowerShell).
- AWS and/or Terraform certifications.
- Experience working in public-sector or highly regulated environments.
- Experience with vendor coordination or oversight.
- Familiarity with Agile delivery tools and project management practices.
- Exposure to organizational change management (OCM).
