Senior Software Engineer (Java/Microservices)

About the Role

In this contingent engineering role, you will contribute as a technical consultant on complex, large-scale software initiatives. You will analyze multifaceted engineering challenges, evaluate solutions involving both established and novel technologies, and support long-term strategic planning. You will collaborate closely with client stakeholders to drive delivery, ensure compliance, and support high-impact technical decision-making.
Responsibilities

• Lead and consult on complex engineering initiatives with broad organizational impact.
• Analyze multi-dimensional software engineering challenges requiring evaluation of diverse and sometimes ambiguous factors.
• Recommend and implement scalable solutions aligned with architectural standards, policies, and compliance requirements.
• Partner strategically with client teams to influence technical direction and support delivery execution.
• Contribute to the design and development of modern, cloud-ready applications and microservices.
• Support mature engineering practices such as CI/CD, automation, code quality, and DevOps.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
• Monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues using modern observability tools.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of Software Engineering experience, or equivalent (consulting, training, military experience, or education).
• 7+ years of experience in:
  • Java / J2EE development
  • Microservices design & development

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with the following technologies and frameworks:
  • Java, J2EE, Spring (Core, MVC, AOP, Batch, Spring Boot)
  • REST and SOAP Web Services
  • Messaging technologies: JMS, Kafka
  • Cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, PCF (or similar)
  • Databases: Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB (NoSQL)
• Strong understanding of Object-Oriented Design principles and design patterns.
• Experience building microservices using REST and/or GraphQL.
• Experience using build and CI/CD tools such as Gradle, GitHub, Jenkins, NPM.
• Strong knowledge of modern engineering practices:
  • CI/CD
  • Test-Driven Development (TDD)
  • Automation frameworks (BDD, Cucumber)
  • DevOps pipelines
• Solid understanding of Agile methodologies.
• Experience with monitoring and telemetry tools such as Splunk, CloudWatch, AppDynamics, ElasticSearch.
• Experience with container/orchestration and cloud-native platforms (OpenShift, Kubernetes, Azure, Google Cloud Platform) is a plus.
• Experience building Single-Page Applications (SPAs) using HTML5, AngularJS, or ReactJS is a plus.
• Hands-on experience with SQL and query performance tuning.
