Roles and responsibilities:
The Product Director is responsible for defining and executing product strategy for mission-critical federal systems supporting Defense and Veteran Affairs (VA) programs. This role leads end-to-end product lifecycle management, from concept and solutioning through delivery and sustainment, ensuring compliance with federal regulations, security standards, and operational requirements. The Product Director serves as the primary bridge between government stakeholders, engineering teams, and delivery partners.
Key Responsibilities
Product Strategy & Vision
- Define and own the product vision, roadmap, and multi-year strategy for DoD and VA federal systems.
- Translate agency mission objectives and statutory requirements into scalable, compliant product solutions.
- Drive solution architecture alignment with federal modernization initiatives (cloud, interoperability, data sharing).
Federal Solutioning & Delivery
- Lead solutioning efforts for federal programs, including RFP responses, technical approaches, and cost/value tradeoffs.
- Partner with enterprise and solution architects to design secure, resilient, and highly available systems.
- Oversee delivery of complex, multi-vendor, multi-system integrations across legacy and modern platforms.
- Ensure systems support high-volume, mission-critical workflows with defined SLAs and performance targets.
Stakeholder & Customer Engagement
- Act as the primary product liaison to government program leadership, contracting officers, and clinical/operational SMEs.
- Facilitate requirements shaping, backlog prioritization, and scope negotiations with federal customers.
- Present product strategy, milestones, risks, and outcomes to executive-level federal stakeholders.
Compliance, Security & Governance
- Ensure adherence to FISMA, FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, HIPAA, Section 508, and agency-specific security controls.
- Partner with security and compliance teams to support ATO, continuous monitoring, and audit readiness.
- Embed governance, risk management, and change control into product execution.
Agile Product Management
- Lead multiple product teams using Agile / SAFe / hybrid delivery models in federal environments.
- Define product KPIs, success metrics, and value realization aligned to agency outcomes.
- Balance feature delivery with technical debt reduction, reliability, and operational excellence.
Vendor & Partner Management
- Coordinate with system integrators, COTS vendors, and subcontractors to ensure alignment with product strategy.
- Evaluate and onboard third-party solutions while ensuring compliance and interoperability.
- Manage dependencies and risks across partner ecosystems.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in product management or solution leadership for federal government systems.
- Direct experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD), Veteran Affairs (VA), or adjacent federal agencies.
- Strong background in solutioning complex, regulated platforms (healthcare, benefits, logistics, or mission systems).
- Hands-on experience with cloud-based federal environments (AWS GovCloud, Azure Government).
- Deep understanding of federal acquisition, compliance, and security frameworks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting VA health, disability, benefits, or care management systems.
- Prior involvement in RFPs, proposals, and capture efforts for federal programs.
- Familiarity with HL7, FHIR, claims, eligibility, scheduling, or care coordination systems.
- Experience leading products through ATO and production sustainment.
- PMP, CSPO, SAFe, or federal IT certifications (preferred).
