Cloud Database Reliability Engineer

OVERVIEW
The Technology Division seeks a Cloud Database Reliability Engineer to design, build, and evolve automated database infrastructure for our cloud-native enterprise platform supporting mission-critical applications.

You'll work with a collaborative team of database professionals to create
self-service tooling and reusable infrastructure that enables development
teams to move faster while maintaining enterprise-grade reliability and security.
This role emphasizes automation, infrastructure-as-code, and building platforms
that scale.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design and implement infrastructure-as-code (AWS CDK) for AWS RDS database infrastructure (Oracle and Postgres), focusing on automation, repeatability, and self-service capabilities
• Build and maintain automated solutions for database provisioning, patching, backup/recovery, monitoring, and lifecycle management
• Build and maintain GitLab CI/CD pipelines and tooling that enable developers and DBAs to perform routine database operations safely and independently
• Collaborate with DevOps and SysOps teams to implement database security best practices including encryption, IAM policies, and access controls
• Support long-term database migration initiatives through tooling, automation, and infrastructure improvements
• Optimize database infrastructure costs using FinOps principles while maintaining performance and reliability standards
• Participate in incident response and troubleshooting for database infrastructure issues (limited on-call)
• Mentor team members on cloud database best practices, automation techniques, and AWS services
• Stay current with AWS database services and emerging technologies to continuously improve platform capabilities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 5+ years experience with AWS cloud infrastructure, including hands-on work with RDS database services
• Strong experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools (AWS CDK or CloudFormation preferred; Terraform acceptable)
• Demonstrated experience building CI/CD pipelines using GitLab or similar tools
• Strong scripting skills in Python or TypeScript for automation (proficiency in both is a plus)
• Solid understanding of relational database concepts and production experience with either Oracle or Postgres (experience with both is a plus)
• Experience with AWS IAM, VPC networking, and security best practices
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively across teams
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision in a collaborative team environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, Database Specialty, or DevOps)
• Experience with AWS Lambda for serverless automation
• Familiarity with database migration tools and strategies
• Knowledge of GitOps workflows and declarative configuration management
• Experience with monitoring and observability tools (AWS CloudWatch, Grafana, OpenSearch)
• Background in traditional DBA work with transition to cloud/automation
• Experience with FinOps or cloud cost optimization initiatives

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related technical field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
• 5+ years of progressive experience in cloud infrastructure, database administration, or platform engineering roles
• Demonstrated track record of delivering automation and infrastructure solutions in production environments
• Experience working in Agile/collaborative team environments
• Experience in regulated industries, accounting, or government environments

CANDIDATE SCREENING PRIORITY

• AWS RDS hands-on experience (not just studied it)
• Infrastructure-as-Code production experience
• Can code/script for automation (not just GUI users)

STRONG PREFERENCE 

• GitLab CI/CD specifically
• AWS CDK specifically
• Either Oracle or Postgres production experience
