The purpose of this position is to utilize expertise in Power Electronics Hardware, Embedded Firmware, and Motor Drive Systems to develop, execute, and lead testing and qualification activities for new Variable Speed Drive (VSD/VFD) platforms and support redesign, cost reduction, quality improvement, and sustaining engineering initiatives for existing products.

This role is responsible for validating the functionality, performance, reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance of variable speed drives ranging from 11kW to 300kW. The engineer will work closely with hardware, firmware, controls, systems, quality, manufacturing, and supplier teams to ensure successful product development and commercialization.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for testing electronics hardware and embedded firmware design functions, performance qualification, and reliability through internal engineering teams and/or external design partners for 11kW to 300kW Variable Speed Drive products.
  • Develop comprehensive validation plans, test procedures, and qualification reports to verify compliance with product requirements and industry standards.
  • Perform functional, electrical, thermal, environmental, and reliability testing of power electronic systems internally or validate conformance working with external suppliers
  • Validate motor control performance working with internal firmware engineers or external suppliers.
  • Conduct power quality and harmonics testing in accordance with IEEE 519 and applicable international standards.
  • Support electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) compliance testing.
  • Perform thermal performance characterization using thermal imaging and temperature measurement techniques as needed.
  • Confirm products meets reliability test plan working external suppliers.
  • Analyze test data, identify root causes of failures, and drive corrective actions with internal or external design teams.
  • Support UL, CE, VDE, and other global certification activities by coordinating with external test laboratories and regulatory agencies.
  • Support supplier qualification, component validation, and design verification activities.
  • Participate in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Design Reviews, and Product Risk Assessments.
  • Provide technical support for customer field issues, and product investigations.
  • Author and maintain detailed engineering test reports, validation summaries, and design qualification documentation.

Basic Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Electronic Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in power electronics, motor drives, variable frequency drives (VFDs), power conversion systems, or industrial automation products.
  • Demonstrated experience testing and qualifying electronics hardware and embedded firmware to meet performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of Power Electronics, Three-phase power systems, Inverters and converters, Motor control systems, Power semiconductors (IGBTs and SiC devices), Protection and safety circuits
  • Experience using laboratory equipment such as Oscilloscopes, Power analyzers, High-voltage differential probes, Current probes, Thermal imaging equipment, Environmental chambers
  • Ability to obtain, review, interpret, and apply international safety and regulatory standards to ensure product compliance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively coordinate multiple projects across global teams.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and problem-solving capabilities.

Preferred Requirements
  • 7-10+ years of power electronics and variable speed drive product qualification experience.
  • Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Controls Engineering, or related field.
  • Extensive experience with industrial Variable Speed Drives (11kW to 300kW).
  • Experience with high-speed motor drive applications, HVAC systems, compressor drives, or Oil-Free Compressor (OFC) technologies.
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, including UL 61800-5-1, IEC 61800 Series, IEC 61000 EMC Standards, IEEE 519 Harmonics Standard
  • Experience in EMI/EMC mitigation techniques, compliance testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Active Front End (AFE) drives and regenerative drive systems.
  • Strong technical project management skills and demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional validation activities.
  • Skilled in organizing, prioritizing, and coordinating effective working relationships with engineering, quality, manufacturing, sourcing, suppliers, and external laboratories.
