Senior Google Cloud Platform Database Engineer (Migration & Strategy)

Overview

Our client is seeking a Senior Database Engineer with strong cloud migration and consultative experience to support the migration of on-prem application databases to Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform). This role will focus on discovery, assessment, strategy creation, and migration planning across multiple application and database environments.

The ideal candidate is comfortable operating in ambiguity, working with cross-functional teams, and helping shape technical direction where standards and processes are still evolving.

Key Responsibilities

Lead discovery efforts to identify and document existing on-prem databases, including ownership, usage, dependencies, and technical characteristics

Work with application owners and stakeholders across the business to validate current-state architectures

Define database migration strategies for each system, including re-host, re-platform, refactor, or retire recommendations

Recommend appropriate Google Cloud Platform target-state database technologies (e.g., Cloud SQL, PostgreSQL, etc.) based on application needs

Collaborate with internal teams and partners (including infrastructure and cloud teams) to align on migration approaches

Create high-level migration roadmaps and recommended timelines (no predefined timeline exists today)

Support architectural discussions and provide input into cloud and database design decisions

Ensure alignment with database owners around handoffs, approvals, and migration sequencing

Serve as a consultative technical resource throughout the migration planning and execution phases

Required Qualifications

Strong experience with relational databases such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or similar

Hands-on experience with database migrations from on-prem to cloud environments

Working knowledge of Google Cloud Platform and cloud-native database offerings

Ability to assess heterogeneous environments with mixed technologies (Windows, Linux, .NET, Java, etc.)

Experience working with multiple application teams and database owners in large enterprises

Comfortable leading technical discussions without predefined requirements

Strong communication skills and stakeholder-facing experience

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience designing or contributing to cloud migration strategies

Exposure to both database architecture and data migration considerations

Experience working alongside systems integrators or consulting partners

Background in highly regulated or large-scale enterprise environments
