Sam's Tech Member Desk Engineering is responsible for building and managing the applications and services used at the Member Services Desk across all Sam's Club locations in the United States. Our solutions power critical member-facing experiences, including membership signups, renewals, upgrades, returns processing, and item purchases at the service desk.
As we continue to modernize and enhance these experiences, we are looking for a highly experienced Mobile Staff Engineer / Technical Lead to help drive the next generation of our platform.
Role Overview We are seeking a hands-on Mobile Staff Engineer / Technical Lead with deep expertise in cross-platform mobile application development to architect, build, and scale innovative experiences for our Member Desk applications.
The ideal candidate has extensive experience delivering production-grade mobile applications across both iOS and Android platforms, is highly proficient in JavaScript and React Native development, and has successfully integrated mobile applications with peripheral devices using Bluetooth and related communication protocols.
This role requires a strong technical leader who can influence architecture, mentor engineers, collaborate across functions, and drive execution from concept through production.
What You'll Do - Architect, design, and lead the implementation of new mobile capabilities and user experiences across iOS and Android platforms.
- Drive technical strategy and architectural decisions for React Native applications while ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Partner closely with Product, Design, Operations, and Engineering leadership to define roadmaps and deliver business outcomes.
- Lead end-to-end development efforts, from technical design and implementation through testing, release, and production support.
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to engineers across the team and broader organization.
- Establish and promote engineering best practices, including code reviews, automated testing, observability, and performance optimization.
- Collaborate with hardware and platform teams to integrate and support peripheral devices, including Bluetooth-enabled hardware and other connected devices used in club operations.
- Monitor application performance, stability, and user experience metrics, leveraging data to continuously improve product quality.
What You'll Bring - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- 8+ years of experience developing and delivering mobile applications in an Agile environment.
- Strong expertise building cross-platform mobile applications for both iOS and Android using React Native.
- Deep proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern mobile application development practices.
- Experience leading the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of large-scale mobile applications.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and building extensible, maintainable systems.
- Experience improving code quality through automated testing, code reviews, CI/CD, and engineering best practices.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and technical leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with native iOS (Swift/Objective-C) and/or Android (Kotlin/Java) development.
- Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) or other cross-platform mobile technologies.
- Hands-on experience integrating mobile applications with peripheral hardware, including Bluetooth/BLE devices, scanners, printers, payment terminals, or other connected devices.
- Experience troubleshooting device connectivity, communication protocols, and hardware-software integration challenges.
- Experience with mobile application observability, performance monitoring, crash analytics, and reliability engineering.
- Prior experience leading large mobile initiatives or serving as a technical lead for distributed engineering teams.

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00
Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
Additional compensation for certain positions may also include Regional Pay Zone (RPZ) (based on location).
