Description Position OverviewThe Instructional Designer will evaluate outdated training materials, observe current workflows, and develop modern, engaging, adult-learning-based content. This includes microlearning, job aids, interactive content, short-form video (including TikTok-style formats), and written assessments that measure both knowledge and application.
The designer will build the full program; internal on-the-job trainers will handle delivery, so strong documentation and "train-the-trainer" alignment is crucial.
The company currently does
not have an instructional design software stack, so they are open to whatever tools the contractor prefers. They may invest in platforms, but ideally the candidate brings proficiency in their own toolbox.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct needs assessments through stakeholder interviews, onsite observations, and review of outdated materials.
- Apply adult learning theory to build modern, engaging, learner-centered content.
- Develop clear learning objectives and align all materials to those objectives.
- Create interactive and multimedia learning assets (eLearning, videos, microlearning, motion graphics, etc.).
- Create written assessments that accurately measure knowledge retention and real-world application.
- Build microlearning modules, job aids, quick guides, and performance support tools.
- Redesign or rebrand content based on existing brand guidelines.
- Collaborate with internal leaders to design a train-the-trainer structure for on-the-job trainers.
- Present work, gather feedback, and iterate quickly with stakeholders.
Requirements Top Skills & Qualifications1. Adult Learning Theory Expertise- Strong understanding of how adults learn in operational and hands-on environments.
- Ability to translate complex tasks into digestible learning experiences.
2. Modern Instructional Design & Multimedia Development- Skilled in creating interactive, engaging learning materials.
- Experience producing short-form video content (e.g., TikTok-style) and other visual learning formats.
- Familiar with rapid authoring tools and instructional design models (ADDIE, Agile, SAM).
3. Microlearning, Job Aids & In-Person Training Support- Strong background in developing microlearning modules and effective job aids.
- Ability to design programs that internal trainers can easily deliver.
- Experience building "train-the-trainer" resources preferred.
Preferred Tools & Technologies The company is flexible and willing to invest in software, but they prefer candidates who already have their own toolbox and are proficient in:
- eLearning authoring tools (e.g., Articulate 360, Rise, Captivate, Vyond)
- Video editing tools (e.g., Camtasia, Adobe Premiere Rush)
- Graphic design (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite)
- LMS familiarity is a plus but not required
