Job Description: Lead Solution Engineer – Virtual Applications & Desktop Platforms
Location: Louisville, TN
Duration- Contract
Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Solution Engineer with deep experience across modern virtual
workspace and cloud platform technologies to help shape both our current and future end-user computing
and application delivery strategy. While Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops remains an important part of our
current environment, this role is equally focused on defining and advancing a future-state platform built on
modern solutions such as Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), Windows 365, and Azure infrastructure-as-a-
service (IaaS).
This individual will serve as a technical authority in the virtual workspace and cloud infrastructure domain,
responsible for assessing the existing Citrix-based environment, identifying opportunities to modernize,
and designing future-state solutions that emphasize SaaS-friendly architectures, cloud-native capabilities,
and modern ways of working. The role is ideal for a hands-on engineer who can lead technical discussions,
challenge legacy patterns, and translate business needs into scalable, secure, and forward-looking
platform solutions.
The Solution Engineer will work closely with architecture, infrastructure, security, and business
stakeholders to guide platform decisions, define modernization principles, and create a clear, actionable
transition strategy aligned with where the organization is headed.
Key Responsibilities
Act as a technical lead for virtual application and desktop platforms, with ownership spanning both the current Citrix-based environment and emerging modern workspace platforms. Assess and document the existing virtual application and desktop architecture, identifying gaps, risks, technical debt, and opportunities to reduce reliance on legacy remote access protocols. Lead solution design efforts that balance near-term platform stability with long-term modernization and cloud-first strategies. Design and evaluate modern virtual workspace solutions, including Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), Windows 365, and supporting Azure IaaS components (compute, storage, networking). Evaluate platform options and delivery models, providing recommendations based on business outcomes, user experience, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability. Partner with business and technology stakeholders to understand evolving use cases and advocate for SaaS-first, identity-driven, and cloud-native approaches where appropriate. Define future-state architectures, including modernization roadmaps, migration and coexistence strategies, and phased transition plans away from heavy dependence on Citrix. Develop technical standards, design artifacts, and reference architectures for modern virtual workspace and cloud platforms. Provide hands-on guidance and mentorship to engineering teams during implementation, troubleshooting, and optimization of both legacy and modern solutions. Collaborate closely with security, networking, identity, and cloud infrastructure teams to ensure solutions meet enterprise security, compliance, and architectural standards. Stay current on industry trends and emerging technologies across EUC, cloud platforms, SaaS delivery models, and modern workplace capabilities. Required Qualifications Strong hands-on experience with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, including design, deployment, and operational support in enterprise environments. Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, or supporting modern virtual workspace solutions such as Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and/or Windows 365. Solid background in cloud and enterprise infrastructure, including Azure IaaS concepts such as compute, storage, networking, and identity integration. Proven ability to operate in a lead engineering role, influencing platform strategy, architectural direction, and modernization decisions. Experience designing and supporting complex, large-scale environments across hybrid and cloud-hosted platforms. Strong philosophical alignment with modern ways of working, including reducing dependency on legacy remote protocols in favor of SaaS-friendly, cloud-native solutions. Ability to quickly adapt, learn, and lead through evolving platform strategies and emerging technologies. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to decompose legacy environments and propose pragmatic modernization paths. Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating technical tradeoffs and future-state vision to both technical and non-technical audiences. Preferred Experience Hands-on experience with Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, or similar modern EUC platforms in production environments. Experience designing or operating Azure IaaS solutions supporting virtual desktops and application delivery. Familiarity with SaaS-first strategies, identity-driven access models, and modern endpoint management
approaches. Experience planning and executing enterprise-scale platform transitions or modernization initiatives. Comfort operating in environments with evolving or loosely defined requirements, helping drive clarity, structure, and forward momentum. What Success Looks Like A clearly documented and well-understood current-state virtual application and desktop environment. Practical, prioritized recommendations for improving stability and performance while reducing technical debt. A defined, future-ready strategy that modernizes the virtual workspace platform and reduces reliance on Citrix where appropriate. Strong alignment across engineering, architecture, security, and business teams on platform direction and modernization principles. Virtual and application delivery solutions that are secure, scalable, cloud-aligned, and positioned for long-term success
