Summary
Senior System Administrator – Linux (Fully Remote)
Our client, a leading Pacific Northwest utility provider committed to public service and environmental preservation, is looking for a System Administrator with expertise in Linux for their Portland, Oregon location. To be considered for this position you must reside within 125 miles of our client’s office. This position will provide operating implementation design and system support to provide sustainable, stable, and secure enterprise level servers including backup recovery, performance tuning, upgrades/patches, maintenance, troubleshooting, permissions, and file sharing. This position focuses primarily on configuration and configuration management of the operating system and applications that rely upon Enterprise distributions of Linux.

Key Responsibilities for Senior System Administrator:
- Assist developers and application support teams design system architectures that comply with Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA) and company policies.
- Provide architectural guidance to developers and team members on the implementation of Linux and UNIX platforms.
- Perform operations and maintenance on Linux servers.
- Support, configure, and maintain Puppet infrastructure, including the ability to create and perform unit test pipeline workflows.
- Configure and apply Puppet SCE components for security compliance.
- Support and configure GitLab change control environment.
- Manage data store activities local and using SAN protocols such as CIFS, NFS.
- Maintain Oracle and Redhat Linux with the latest hardware and software firmware and configurations including regular patching.
- Maintain connectivity with Windows file and print servers and configure SMTP to exchange mail with an Exchange system.
- Manage LDAP configuration within Active Directory using Centrify.
- Leverage existing toolsets to automate status monitoring/alarming.
- Support Linux on VMware ESXi in coordination with a Fabric support team.
- Design improvements to various service and process management capabilities of the major Nix platforms.
- Perform system administration including the following actions:
- Configuring applicable software and systems.
- Maintaining local documentation.
- Installing/updating/removing software.
- Applying change control processes and procedures.
- Troubleshooting and resolving issues.
- Patch management.
- Software deployment services.
- Linux infrastructure.
- In-house developed applications.
- Shell and Python scripting/automation.
- Managing cron software utility.
- Validate hardware and infrastructure design specifications.
- Assist in the technical design.
- Monitor and verify system availability to meet service level agreements.
- Provide advice and assistance to customers, troubleshoot complex problems, and provide support in a manner that minimizes interruptions in customers’ ability to carry out business activities.
- Maintain application documentation as it relates to company specific implementations.
- Communicate with technical team and quality assurance (QA) team members to verify that implementations meet requirements.
- Perform routine audits of security controls to verify compliance.
- Apply configuration settings to servers as pre-defined and documented by manager or lead.
- Assist in release management and deployment of application customizations.
- Participate in a regular rotation providing on-call support for services reliant upon Linux.
Requirements for Senior System Administrator:
- 10+ years combination of education and/or work experience in computer/information technology or related field is required.
- 5+ years of experience working in a large production environment is required.
- Architecture, installation, and support of Red Hat or Oracle Linux operating systems.
- Maintenance and support of Exadata server systems.
- Interconnectivity with Windows servers for file, mail, and print sharing.
- Experience architecting and configuring Linux systems that utilize high availability RAID and SAN storage solutions.
- Automating administrative tasks and procedures using KSH, CSH or Perl scripts.
- Creation of virtual hosts and clients using products such as VMware EXSi and/or VMware EXSi administration experience.
- Administration and architecture of Apache, Tomcat, Weblogic and/or JBoss application servers.
- Security hardening and configuration management aligned with FISMA or DoD standards.
- Experience architecting and configuring Puppet infrastructure including unit test pipeline workflow.
- Experience configuring and reporting Puppet SCE security module (compliance admin).
- Experience with gitlab change control and infrastructure support.
