Overview

We are seeking a GIS Software Engineer to join a growing team focused on developing, supporting, and enhancing enterprise GIS solutions. This individual will work closely with technical teams, business stakeholders, product owners, architects, and operational support groups to build and maintain scalable GIS applications and integrations. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with the Esri technology stack, modern software development practices, and utility network solutions.

This role offers the opportunity to help design and deliver innovative GIS solutions while supporting critical business operations in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, configure, and maintain GIS applications, integrations, backend services, and automation solutions.
  • Build medium-complexity software solutions utilizing modern coding standards, development methodologies, and best practices.
  • Develop and support applications using .NET, JavaScript, and GIS-focused technologies.
  • Create and maintain automation workflows using Python, ArcPy, REST APIs, JSON, and related technologies.
  • Analyze business and technical requirements and translate them into scalable system designs and software solutions.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, Architects, Engineering Leads, UI/UX Designers, and Project Managers to deliver solutions on schedule.
  • Participate in backlog refinement, story estimation, technical design reviews, and sprint planning activities.
  • Perform unit testing and support automated testing initiatives to ensure application reliability and performance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex application, integration, database, and production support issues.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including system designs, support procedures, workflows, and knowledge articles.
  • Support ongoing production operations, issue resolution, maintenance activities, and enhancement requests.
  • Partner with infrastructure, security, and architecture teams to ensure compliance with enterprise standards.
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to technical knowledge sharing across the organization.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer, Programmer Analyst, or similar role within a GIS-focused environment.
  • Strong hands-on experience with .NET development.
  • Strong experience with JavaScript development.
  • Experience with Python scripting and automation.
  • Working knowledge of Esri technologies, including:
    • ArcGIS Pro
    • ArcGIS Enterprise
    • Portal for ArcGIS
    • ArcGIS Server
    • Enterprise Geodatabases
    • Feature Services
    • Utility Network
  • Experience developing, supporting, or integrating GIS applications and services.
  • Strong understanding of REST APIs, JSON, web services, and system integrations.
  • Proficiency with SQL and relational database concepts.
  • Experience working with Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server databases.
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot complex technical issues across applications, integrations, and data environments.
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC), testing methodologies, release management, and production support processes.
  • Experience creating clear and effective technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Esri Utility Network, including:
    • Branch Versioning
    • Subnetwork Management
    • Network Tracing
    • Utility Data Models
  • Experience within electric utility, gas utility, field operations, outage management, asset management, or work management environments.
  • Familiarity with enterprise utility systems such as:
    • EWAM
    • AUD
    • Locusview
    • OMS/NMS
    • SAP
    • MIMS
  • Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise administration, service publishing, hosted feature layers, Portal upgrades, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with Oracle Spatial and enterprise geodatabase administration, reconciliation, versioning, and data validation.
  • Knowledge of FME, ETL platforms, batch processing, and data transformation workflows.
  • Experience with web technologies including HTML, CSS, and related frameworks.
  • Understanding of cloud technologies, hybrid architectures, containerized platforms, high-availability environments, and disaster recovery concepts.
  • Exposure to AI/ML, GeoAI, remote sensing, imagery analytics, LiDAR, or predictive analytics solutions.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity, compliance, data governance, operational controls, and change management processes.

  2. 5+ years of professional software development experience.
  3. Hands-on Utility Network experience.
  4. Strong .NET and JavaScript development skills.
  5. Python scripting and automation experience preferred.

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Additional education in Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.

Ideal Background

Successful candidates will come from GIS-focused software engineering environments and possess strong experience working with Esri technologies. Candidates with Utility Network expertise and experience supporting electric or gas utility organizations are especially desirable. This role is ideal for a technically strong engineer who enjoys building solutions, solving complex GIS challenges, and driving innovation within enterprise environments.
