Job Details

The Vice President of Finance is responsible for leading the fiscal and financial functions of a mission-driven nonprofit organization in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and financial management practices appropriate for the nonprofit sector. This executive leadership role provides strategic financial guidance, strengthens organizational controls, and ensures the financial infrastructure supports both current operations and long-term growth.

Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Participate in the development of strategic and operational plans, programs, and organizational initiatives.
  • Lead and facilitate the annual budgeting process, providing appropriate tools, guidance, and financial analysis.
  • Evaluate and advise leadership on the financial implications of organizational decisions, long-term plans, new programs, strategic partnerships, investments, and regulatory developments.
  • Provide timely analysis of financial results, cash flow projections, benchmarks, and trends to support executive decision-making.
  • Facilitate annual audits and tax reporting to ensure timely compliance and appropriate financial oversight.
  • Ensure financial systems, procedures, and processes effectively support leadership and operational teams.
  • Strengthen policies, procedures, and internal controls through effective systems and technology.
  • Provide financial guidance, technical support, and mentoring to organizational leaders to strengthen financial discipline across the organization.
  • Manage banking relationships and develop strategies to optimize cash flow and effectively utilize organizational funds.
  • Maintain relationships with investment managers, financial advisors, actuaries, and other external partners.
  • Conduct financial due diligence and provide financial review and guidance regarding organizational contracts and commitments.
  • Continuously evaluate opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of finance operations.

Management & Oversight
  • Oversee grants administration to promote effective financial management, reporting, and compliance.
  • Manage outsourced finance and accounting relationships.
  • Lead improvements to financial systems, reporting tools, processes, and internal controls to enhance efficiency and organizational decision-making.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Ability to perform typical office activities, including sitting, standing, walking, bending, and using standard computer and office equipment.
  • Ability to lift and move materials as required, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to participate in activities that may occasionally require extended periods of standing or walking.
  • Ability to travel locally to organizational locations, partner organizations, meetings, and training events as needed.
  • Position primarily operates within a professional office and community-based environment.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline required.
  • CPA designation strongly preferred.

Skills & Experience
  • 7-10 years of progressively responsible accounting and finance experience, including nonprofit financial management, leadership, and supervisory responsibilities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of budgeting, accounting, financial management, and general business practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate asset management, budgeting, and financial operations.
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting, cash flow management, audits, internal controls, and compliance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong time management, organization, and project prioritization capabilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees, executive leadership, board members, community stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Forward-thinking leadership style with strong ethics, sound judgment, and a commitment to financial stewardship.
  • Strategic mindset combined with strong technical, analytical, and operational capabilities.
