OVERVIEW OF DEPARTMENT:

New York City Transit's Department of Subways, with over 6,400 subway cars and 472 stations, employs 29,000 individuals who work together 24/7, 365 days a year, to move millions of customers safely to their destinations. These employees operate trains, maintain railcars, assist customers in stations, make critical right-of-way and electronic repairs, and provide technical and analytic support to deliver timely and reliable customer services.

The Operations Support Division within the Department of Subways provides analytical and management support to the operating divisions. Within the Division, the SPEED Unit functions as a hybrid analytical, design, and operational team. It is responsible for interpreting track and signal-related data and analytics, participating in signal system design, and facilitating changes to operating rules and procedures in order to improve subway system travel times, reliability, and consistency.

This position is excellent for a motivated individual with a background in rail systems design who is interested in further developing their knowledge in a real-world setting. The intern will support the SPEED Unit in strengthening the Department of Subways' efforts to improve system travel times and reliability. This role will focus on coordinating with signal, track, and railcar engineering teams to facilitate changes to system speed limits, signal layouts, and design policy. The intern will also work with operating divisions to assist in investigating human factors issues that contribute to extended travel times and facilitate the implementation of modifications to operating rules and procedures to address them. The intern will help maintain and improve dashboards, SharePoint sites, and databases that track the unit's progress on the aforementioned projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze subway running time, schedule adherence, and incident datasets to support the development of initiatives to improve subway system service speeds and regularity.
  • Investigate and develop-in partnership with engineering teams-improvements to the signal system that would result in reduced running times.
  • Liaise with engineering and operational teams to develop improved policies, procedures, and signal/track designs that are beneficial to performance.
  • Support analytical and operational employees in the investigation of operational incidents to assist efforts to mitigate their impact on performance.
  • Assist in maintaining and improving dashboards, business intelligence tools, and databases that track the work of the unit.
  • Conduct validation checks, data collection, and analyses to quantify the performance impacts of changes to speed limits and operating procedures.
  • Document, facilitate, and maintain meeting minutes and agendas for cross-departmental efforts intended to modernize and improve design standards and operating policies.
  • Support preparation of executive briefings, performance summaries, and data requests.

PROJECTS:

  • Assisting the team in the coordination of engineering, capital planning, and operating divisions to implement revised policies and design standards governing subway system speed limits, track design, and signal design.
  • Rebuilding and bolstering the team's Power BI dashboards and SharePoint websites to better organize and communicate the progress of the team's work.
  • Providing analytical and technical writing support as needed for ongoing projects and initiatives intended to improve subway system running times.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must.
  • The candidate should possess organizational, analytical and communication skills.
  • The candidate should be able to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work independently while being an active team player.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
  • Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least 2.5 GPA AND/OR matriculated in a graduate program in good standing with at least 2.8 GPA
  • Major(s) Preferred: Railway Systems Engineering, Railway Signal Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Data Science, Operations Research, Computer Science, Physics, Information Systems, Transportation, Urban Planning, Economics, or related field.

All applicants must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of application. Students' transcript must be submitted.
