As a Senior Software Engineer on the Notebooks team, you'll play a critical role in delivering scalable, reliable, and low-latency experiencesYou will drive technical direction for key areas of the platform, helping design and build Copilot Notebooks, a core AI-first platform that powers long-running, grounded Copilot experiences across Microsoft 365. You will collaborate closely across disciplines, especially with Applied Scientists and partner teams, while solving tough technical challenges and delivering meaningful customer impact.

Responsibilities

  • Guides engineers within and across teams to produce extensible, maintainable, well-tested, secure, and performant code that adheres to design specifications.
  • Partners with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for one or more complex scenarios.
  • Provides technical leadership in identifying dependencies and developing design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
  • Leads by example and mentors others to produce high-quality code, promoting engineering excellence and long-term maintainability.
  • Holds accountability as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), mentoring engineers within and across related teams, and participating in on-call rotations to monitor system, product, or service health, including degradation, downtime, or interruptions.
  • Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to emerging trends, technologies, and patterns to improve availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance, while driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale; shares learnings with other engineers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, TypeScript, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, TypeScript, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience in web development, including JavaScript/TypeScript and web frameworks.
  • Experience working on distributed systems and/or high-performance systems.
  • Experience working with Large Language Models (LLM) APIs & integrations.
  • Experience collaborating closely with customer teams.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
