Summary

Overview

We are seeking an experienced SQL Server DBA Consultant to provide immediate stabilization support and long-term architectural assessment for a manufacturing client's production SQL Server environment. The client operates a monolithic database serving as the central repository for sales and product data that has recently experienced critical performance issues including deadlocks affecting business operations.

This is a hands-on engagement requiring someone who can diagnose problems quickly, implement practical fixes, and provide clear recommendations for future scalability.

Engagement Scope

Phase 1: Immediate Stabilization (Weeks 1-2)

Conduct wait statistics analysis to identify root cause of recent deadlock conditions

Implement index and statistics maintenance tasks to improve query optimizer efficiency

Configure real-time blocking alerts with threshold-based notifications

Audit and reschedule overlapping SQL Agent Jobs causing resource contention

Phase 2: Assessment & Recommendations (Weeks 3-6)

Develop data dictionary documenting database structure, relationships, and growth patterns

Perform scalability assessment for projected 30-40% business growth

Evaluate and document architectural options (HA, DR, capacity planning)

Deliver prioritized roadmap with 4-month, 6-month, and 1-year recommendations

Required Qualifications

10+ years hands-on SQL Server DBA experience in production environments

Deep expertise in performance tuning and troubleshooting (wait statistics, deadlock analysis, execution plans)

Strong experience with index optimization and statistics maintenance

Proficiency configuring SQL Server alerting and monitoring

Experience with SQL Agent Job management and scheduling optimization

Ability to document and explain technical findings to non-DBA stakeholders

Excellent written communication skills for deliverables (reports, data dictionaries, roadmaps)

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with legacy/inherited database environments lacking documentation

Background in manufacturing, distribution, or e-commerce industries

Experience designing high availability and disaster recovery solutions

Familiarity with capacity planning for high-growth environments
