About the role
The Senior Consulting Engineer is a recognized technical authority and subject-matter expert for Transmission & Substation engineering. Rather than delivering or drafting an individual project, this role advises across the portfolio — setting engineering standards and design criteria, performing high-level design reviews and QA/QC, providing owner’s-engineer and technical-advisory support, and resolving the most complex, cross-cutting technical problems. The role typically operates as a high-influence individual contributor whose judgment is relied upon by engineers and management alike.
The position is hybrid, combining a remote office with an assigned PG&E work location and periodic travel to substations, project sites, and industry forums.
Key responsibilities
• Serve as recognized technical authority / SME for T&S substation and transmission engineering, contributing to the development of new principles, concepts, and standards.
• Develop, maintain, and govern engineering standards, design criteria, and specifications adopted across the T&S program.
• Conduct high-level design reviews and QA/QC of project drawings, specifications, and documentation prepared by internal teams and outside consultants/EPCs.
• Provide owner’s-engineer and technical-advisory support across the project lifecycle — from planning and specification through procurement, commissioning, and energization.
• Review for compliance interconnection agreements, system-impact and facility studies, PPAs, and contract/owner requirements.
• Lead complex studies and resolve cross-project technical conflicts that require deep, specialized expertise.
• Advise management on long-range technical planning, technology direction, and engineering risk.
• Assist with equipment specifications and vendor selection, verifying that specifications are met and making recommendations at procurement.
• Provide expert guidance and mentorship to engineers across disciplines, and represent PG&E in industry forums and with vendors, ISOs, and agencies.
• Champion safety and regulatory compliance (NERC, WECC, CAISO; NERC CIP where relevant) in all technical guidance.
Required qualifications
• Education: BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (MS preferred).
• Experience: 8+ years of progressive T&S engineering experience with demonstrated SME / technical-authority standing.
• Licensure: Active California PE (Electrical), or ability to obtain by comity within an agreed timeframe.
• Depth: Extensive substation and transmission expertise across 60 kV–500 kV, including design, equipment, and protection.
• Standards: Track record developing engineering standards, criteria, and specifications.
• Advisory: Strong advisory, review, and communication skills; able to brief leadership and produce expert reports.
Preferred qualifications
• MS in Electrical Engineering; PE in multiple states.
• Direct experience with PG&E (or comparable IOU) standards and the PG&E Transmission Interconnection Handbook.
• Depth in protection & control and/or substation automation (IEC 61850).
• Owner’s-engineer or EPC consulting background, including design review and commissioning oversight.
Active participation in industry bodies (IEEE, CIGRE) and standards committees
