Role: Lead Java (or Python) Engineer with DevOps + Platform Engineering mindset - W2 Role
Contract: Contract to Hire
LOCATION: Hybrid - Boston or Needham MA based 4 days a week onsite
Must have a strong Java development background with 10-15+ years of programming experience. Will also take python programming experience. Leading a team of 5 engineers and must have a DevOps + Platform Engineering mindset . Hands-on technical leader (70/30 split) – leads ~5 engineers (onshore/offshore) while remaining deeply hands-on with Development and DevOps. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical leader who combines strong software engineering fundamentals with modern DevOps and platform engineering practices. They are comfortable operating in complex, business-critical environments and can quickly deliver practical solutions while improving long-term platform reliability, scalability, and engineering efficiency.
***KEYS TO THE POSITION***
1. Strong software engineering foundation (ideally Java-based, Python is ok) – must come from a development background, not pure infrastructure/network DevOps. Will also take python programming experience
2. DevOps + Platform Engineering mindset – operates at the intersection of software engineering, automation, and infrastructure
3. Heavy Python scripting expertise – core requirement for automation, CI/CD, and emerging AI/agentic workflows
4. Hands-on CI/CD ownership – building and automating pipelines that support scalable delivery across many applications
5. Cloud experience (AWS preferred) – experience building and operating cloud-based platforms (flex on provider, but cloud is required)
6. Infrastructure as Code (IaC) – hands-on with tools like CloudFormation (Terraform acceptable)
7. Observability & monitoring exposure – familiarity with tools like Elasticsearch, Grafana, OpenTelemetry (critical for platform maturity and migration)
8. SQL / data layer understanding – ability to work across application and platform layers
9. Application modernization experience – involvement in restructuring/refactoring Java-based applications
10. Hands-on technical leader (70/30 split) – leads ~5 engineers (onshore/offshore) while remaining deeply hands-on
11. Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools – practical use of tools like GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or similar to improve engineering efficiency and automation
