Overview:
Our client is launching a brand-new product and engineering team focused on building next-generation customer experiences powered by machine learning, search, recommendations, and personalization. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and scaling cloud-native backend services that support intelligent, customer-facing digital experiences. You will partner closely with Product, Architecture, Design, and Engineering stakeholders to define solutions in an environment where requirements are still evolving.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys building new platforms from scratch, and wants to make a significant impact on both technology and product direction.

Job Duties:
•    Design, develop, and scale enterprise-grade backend services using Java and cloud-native technologies
•    Build APIs, microservices, orchestration layers, and platform services that support search, personalization, recommendation, and AI-driven experiences
•    Partner with Product and Design teams to evaluate technical solutions during discovery and MVP development
•    Contribute to architecture discussions, system design reviews, and technical planning activities
•    Build highly scalable, resilient, and maintainable distributed systems
•    Establish and promote engineering best practices around testing, deployment, observability, and software quality
•    Implement CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices
•    Help navigate evolving product requirements and contribute to technical decision-making
•    Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering efficiency and code quality
•    Collaborate within Agile teams to deliver value while balancing short-term priorities and long-term scalability

Qualifications:
Backend Engineering:
•    7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience
•    Expert-level experience developing applications with Java
•    Experience building enterprise-scale backend platforms, APIs, and distributed systems
•    Strong experience with microservices and service-oriented architectures
•    Experience designing and implementing complex integrations and orchestration layers

Cloud & Architecture:
•    Hands-on experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
•    Strong system design and architecture expertise
•    Experience building scalable, resilient, and highly available systems
•    Familiarity with event-driven and distributed architectures

Engineering Practices:
•    Experience with unit testing, automated testing, and Test-Driven Development (TDD)
•    Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps principles
•    Agile/Scrum experience
•    Knowledge of observability, monitoring, and operational best practices

AI & Modern Development:
•    Experience utilizing AI-powered development tools throughout the software development lifecycle
•    Ability to leverage AI-assisted coding, testing, debugging, and documentation tools to improve engineering productivity and software quality

Preferred Qualifications:
•    Experience building search platforms, recommendation engines, or personalization systems
•    Experience supporting machine learning-powered products
•    Exposure to MLOps, AI platforms, or ML infrastructure
•    Experience with event streaming technologies such as Kafka or Event Hub
•    Experience building large-scale customer-facing digital products
•    Familiarity with experimentation platforms and A/B testing
•    Experience working in greenfield product or platform environments
