Rate: $90/hr - $100/hrOur financial client is seeking a Senior Snowflake Subject Matter Expert (SME) to serve as the go-to technical authority on our Snowflake data platform. This role sits at the intersection of data engineering, architecture, and business enablement, partnering with engineering, analytics, and business teams to design scalable solutions and drive best-in-class adoption of Snowflake across the organization.
The successful candidate will work across platform strategy, solution delivery, governance, optimization, and enablement. This role requires deep Snowflake expertise, strong architectural judgment, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into practical, business-aligned outcomes across a modern enterprise data environment.
Position Summary The Senior Snowflake Subject Matter Expert will be responsible for leading the design, implementation, optimization, and governance of Snowflake-based data platforms and solutions. This role is hands-on and strategic, with ownership spanning architecture, data modeling, performance tuning, security controls, platform standards, and migration initiatives.
The SME will partner closely with data engineers, analysts, architects, security teams, and business stakeholders to ensure Snowflake is deployed and operated as a scalable, secure, and cost-effective enterprise platform. The ideal candidate brings strong technical depth, experience with large-scale data environments, and the ability to mentor teams while influencing platform direction and adoption.
What You'll Do- Serve as the primary technical expert on Snowflake architecture, data modeling, performance tuning, and security best practices.
- Lead the design and implementation of Snowflake environments including data warehouses, data lakes, and data sharing configurations.
- Develop and enforce platform governance standards including RBAC, data masking, tagging, and cost optimization policies.
- Partner with data engineers, analysts, and architects to translate business requirements into scalable Snowflake solutions.
- Drive migration efforts from legacy on-prem or cloud data platforms such as Teradata, Redshift, or SQL Server to Snowflake.
- Evaluate and implement Snowflake-native features including Snowpark, Dynamic Tables, Cortex AI, and Data Marketplace integrations.
- Provide technical mentorship and enablement to junior engineers and cross-functional teams.
- Engage directly with Snowflake account teams to stay current on product roadmap and advocate for platform needs.
- Collaborate with security and compliance teams to ensure data governance and regulatory requirements are met.
- Design multi-layer data models supporting raw, curated, and consumption use cases across enterprise data domains.
- Optimize warehouse usage, query performance, and storage strategies to improve scalability and cost efficiency.
- Help define platform patterns, standards, and reusable frameworks for data onboarding, transformation, sharing, and consumption.
Key Skillsets
Must-Haves- 10+ years of experience in data engineering or data architecture, with 4+ years of hands-on Snowflake expertise.
- Deep knowledge of Snowflake architecture, including virtual warehouses, micro-partitioning, clustering, materialized views, and streams/tasks.
- Proficiency in SQL and at least one modern language used with Snowpark such as Python or Java/Scala.
- Proven experience designing multi-layer data models across raw, curated, and consumption layers in Snowflake environments.
- Strong understanding of ELT/ETL patterns and experience with orchestration tools such as dbt, Airflow, Matillion, or similar platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to optimize query performance and manage warehouse costs at scale.
- Experience implementing Snowflake security controls including role hierarchies, row-level security, and dynamic data masking.
- Strong understanding of data governance, platform standards, and enterprise security best practices.
- Experience designing and operating scalable cloud-based data platforms in production environments.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice-to-Haves- SnowPro Core or SnowPro Advanced certification.
- Experience in financial services, private equity, or a similarly regulated industry.
- Familiarity with cloud data platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform and their native integration with Snowflake.
- Background in data mesh or data product architectures.
- Experience with AI/ML workloads in Snowflake including Cortex and Snowpark ML.
- Experience supporting enterprise migrations from legacy data warehouses to modern cloud-native architectures.
- Familiarity with compliance, auditability, entitlement Ing, and controlled data access patterns in regulated environments.
Success Looks Like -First 90 Days- Ramp quickly into the current Snowflake environment, platform standards, and key business data domains.
- Assess existing architecture, cost patterns, performance bottlenecks, and governance controls.
- Build trusted working relationships with engineering, analytics, architecture, security, and business stakeholders.
- Identify high-value opportunities to improve platform performance, scalability, governance, and adoption.
- Contribute meaningfully to one or more active platform, migration, or optimization initiatives.
First 12 Months- Establish or strengthen enterprise Snowflake standards across architecture, governance, security, and cost management.
- Deliver scalable Snowflake platform capabilities that improve reliability, performance, and business enablement.
- Lead successful migrations and modernization efforts from legacy data platforms into Snowflake.
- Expand adoption of Snowflake-native capabilities including Snowpark, Dynamic Tables, Cortex AI, and data sharing patterns where appropriate.
- Improve platform maturity through reusable patterns, mentoring, documentation, and operational discipline.
- Operate as the trusted senior Snowflake authority across design, delivery, optimization, and continuous improvement.
