Overview Our client, a business consulting and services firm, is introducing AI-powered features into an existing internal tool used for workflow and template management. This is the company's first custom AI build within this application, so the goal is to establish a solid, working foundation rather than build out advanced capability. The client's internal engineering team is actively building these features but is still learning the space as they go, and the client is looking for an experienced AI Architect/Developer to accelerate the work, provide hands-on technical leadership, and upskill the internal team in the process.
The core use case centers on the product's templates. The Product Manager wants AI embedded directly into the tool so that it can recognize the most recently completed template, understand what work has already been done, clearly communicate what it was able to complete on its own, and hand off the remaining work in a way that's easy for a person to pick up and finish. This requires thoughtful solution design around context and state management, prompt structuring, and token efficiency, not just a simple feature bolt-on.
Responsibilities This person will own solution design and architecture for the AI features, documenting key decisions and tradeoffs along the way, and will assess what the internal team has already built to help chart a clear path to a working, production-ready solution. This is a hands-on role, not a purely advisory one - they'll be working directly in code alongside the existing engineering team, designing and optimizing prompt and request structuring against the client's Azure AI Foundry environment and custom models, with particular attention to managing and reducing token usage and cost. They'll also validate and fact-check both the AI's outputs and the team's implementation approach, catching gaps early, while mentoring and coaching the internal team as a player-coach and helping orient the team on best practices for building AI features responsibly and efficiently.
Environment The application is built on .NET and React, with a microservices architecture, SQL Server, and Azure DevOps, in a Microsoft shop overall. The client uses Azure AI Foundry along with their own custom-built models. This is the company's first custom AI build within this particular application, so the environment is still early-stage when it comes to AI maturity, though the surrounding engineering practices and tooling are well established.
Required Experience Ideally, this person has done this kind of work a couple of times before, not as a first-time builder, and brings strong architecture and solution-design skills alongside hands-on development experience in .NET, React, microservices, SQL Server, and Azure DevOps. Direct experience with Azure AI Foundry (or strong transferable experience with similar AI orchestration platforms and custom/fine-tuned models) is important, along with practical, applied experience in prompt engineering, context/request structuring, and token/cost optimization. Strong mentorship and communication skills matter here too, since the internal team is still building foundational AI knowledge, and the right person needs to be comfortable operating in an early-stage, somewhat ambiguous environment.
