About the Role
A venture-backed defense technology company is building advanced directed-energy platforms designed to counter small unmanned aerial threats. The organization focuses on rugged, edge-deployed hardware that transitions quickly from prototype to field deployment.
We are seeking an inventive Electrical Engineer to lead the design, development, and validation of battery and high-voltage power systems for field-ready laser platforms. This role spans concept through production and emphasizes hands-on electronics prototyping, testing, and iterative design in demanding environments.
Key Responsibilities
High-Voltage Converter & Driver Electronics
Design high-voltage DC/DC converters, rectifiers, inverters, diode drivers, and power distribution/control circuits. Perform electrical simulations using tools such as SPICE or MATLAB/Simulink to optimize efficiency, performance, and reliability.
Embedded & Control Electronics
Develop embedded electronics and supporting circuitry for power, sensing, actuation, and system control. Integrate microcontrollers, FPGAs, and mixed-signal circuitry for telemetry, protection, and fault handling. Collaborate with firmware and controls teams during bring-up, validation, and debugging.
Battery Pack & Management Systems
Design and validate battery interfacing and management electronics with strong emphasis on thermal performance and rapid power delivery. Conduct electrical and thermal analyses and testing for ruggedized battery systems.
Wire Harness Design & Fabrication
Create rugged wiring harnesses for high-power electronics and motors. Select connectors, cables, and components that meet electrical, environmental, and mechanical standards.
Prototype Development & Testing
Drive hands-on assembly, prototyping, and rigorous field testing of power electronic systems. Execute electrical, vibration, shock, environmental, and robustness tests to validate system reliability.
Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
Perform DFM reviews to improve production efficiency, reliability, and cost. Collaborate closely with suppliers and fabrication partners to maintain quality standards.
System Integration & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work with mechanical, optical, and robotics teams to integrate electronics into complex hardware platforms. Provide technical guidance during assembly, integration, and deployment.
Documentation & Compliance
Generate detailed schematics, BOMs, wiring diagrams, and assembly documentation
Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards, defense specifications, and export regulations
Required Qualifications
2 5 years of experience in electrical or power electronics engineering (defense, aerospace, robotics, or similar industries)
Proficiency with electrical design and simulation tools such as SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, and Altium Designer
Strong background in battery management systems, high-voltage electronics, and diode driver circuits
Hands-on experience with rugged electronics assembly, integration, and wire harness design
Familiarity with thermal management and EMI/EMC considerations
BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related discipline
Preferred / Nice to Have
Experience with long-duration deployment of hardware in harsh or remote environments
Familiarity with defense or MIL-STD specifications and export compliance requirements
Background in EMI/EMC shielding and mitigation
Active security clearance or ability to obtain one
Work Environment
Fast-paced, highly hands-on engineering culture focused on rapid hardware iteration, field testing, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Ideal for engineers who enjoy building and validating real-world power electronics systems from the ground up.
