Employee Relations Consultant

Position Summary

The Employee Relations Consultant (ERC) serves as a trusted advisor to leaders and employees on a broad range of workplace and employee relations matters. Working with a high degree of independence and sound judgment, the ERC provides consultation, coaching, and guidance designed to promote fair and consistent employment practices, resolve workplace concerns, support effective leadership, and mitigate organizational risk.

The ERC manages complex and sensitive employee relations matters, including workplace investigations, performance and conduct concerns, corrective action, involuntary terminations, conflict resolution, policy interpretation, and employment-related compliance matters. The role partners closely with HR Business Partners, HR leadership, Legal, and other HR functions to identify trends, address emerging risks, and support consistent application of company policies and practices.

Essential Functions

  • Consults with leaders at all levels on complex and sensitive employee relations matters, providing practical guidance that balances employee experience, business needs, consistency, and organizational risk.
  • Conducts timely, thorough, objective, and well-documented workplace investigations involving allegations of misconduct, harassment, discrimination, retaliation, policy violations, and other workplace concerns.
  • Advises leaders on performance management, corrective and disciplinary action, involuntary terminations, workplace conduct, attendance, and other employee relations matters.
  • Provides coaching, conflict resolution, and problem-solving support to leaders and employees to address workplace concerns and promote effective working relationships.
  • Evaluates employee relations matters by gathering relevant information, assessing risk, identifying appropriate options, and providing clear, well-reasoned recommendations to management.
  • Partners with Legal and other appropriate stakeholders on employment-related matters, including support for responses to administrative agency charges and other employment claims.
  • Interprets and applies company policies, employment practices, and applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Maintains current knowledge of employment law and emerging employee relations practices and applies that knowledge to consultation, investigations, policy interpretation, and risk assessment.
  • Identifies and analyzes employee relations trends, recurring issues, and areas of organizational risk; provides insights and recommendations to HR and business leadership regarding opportunities for improvement.
  • Provides input and recommendations regarding HR policies, procedures, practices, and programs to promote clarity, consistency, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Partners with HR Business Partners, HR leadership, and other HR functions to support organizational initiatives and address employee relations needs within assigned client groups.
  • Supports broader HR and employee experience initiatives, including employee engagement and other enterprise-wide programs, as appropriate.
  • Maintains accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of employee relations matters in accordance with company practices and applicable requirements.
  • Handles sensitive and confidential information with appropriate discretion and professionalism.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible Human Resources experience, with significant experience directly managing employee relations matters.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting workplace investigations and advising leaders on complex performance, conduct, corrective action, and termination matters.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations and the ability to apply that knowledge to employee relations situations.
  • Strong consultation and influencing skills, including the ability to appropriately challenge, coach, and advise leaders at varying levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with demonstrated ability to assess complex situations, identify risk, and develop practical recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate sensitive or complex information clearly and professionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex and time-sensitive matters while maintaining attention to detail and appropriate documentation.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and work effectively with sensitive employee and organizational information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to effectively use HR systems and case-management technology.

Preferred

  • Eight or more years of relevant Human Resources and/or Employee Relations experience.
  • Employee Relations experience within a service-oriented, highly regulated, or complex organization.
  • Experience supporting employees and leaders across multiple states or jurisdictions.
  • Professional HR certification such as PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP.

Working Conditions

This position operates primarily in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment, including computers and phones. The role requires extended periods of computer work and regular verbal and written communication.
