Cloud Engineer to work in our
Quantico, VA office.
Please Note: This position is contingent upon additional funding. ECS is seeking an experienced Cloud Engineer (Mid) to support cutting-edge technology for law enforcement and scientific organizations. The Cloud Engineer will be responsible for the design, deployment, configuration, security, monitoring, and maintenance of AWS cloud infrastructure and cloud-native services supporting mission-critical applications and data systems.
We are seeking a creative problem solver who enjoys tackling complex cloud engineering challenges with minimal oversight, enabling scalable, secure, and resilient cloud environments. The ideal candidate has strong AWS experience and a deep understanding of cloud architecture principles, security best practices, automation, and operational excellence.
A strong desire and aptitude for learning is required, along with the ability to adapt and drive change in an environment with evolving requirements, technologies, and security threats. This individual will be integral to supporting secure data operations, system reliability, and infrastructure modernization efforts across diverse client environments.
Responsibilities of the Cloud Engineer include but are not limited to: - Design, deploy, configure, and maintain AWS cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools such as CloudFormation or Terraform.
- Architect and support highly available, fault-tolerant, and scalable AWS environments aligned with AWS Well-Architected Framework best practices.
- Configure and manage core AWS services including EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, VPC, Lambda, CloudWatch, and related services.
- Support multi-environment (Dev, Test, Prod) cloud deployments while ensuring configuration consistency and security compliance.
- Implement and manage networking components including VPCs, subnets, route tables, security groups, NAT gateways, and load balancers.
- Monitor cloud infrastructure performance, availability, and cost utilization using CloudWatch, CloudTrail, AWS Config, and related tools.
- Support patching, upgrades, and lifecycle management of cloud-hosted systems and operating systems (Linux-based preferred).
- Implement security best practices including least-privilege IAM, encryption at rest and in transit, and logging/auditing controls.
- Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure, networking, and system-level issues in AWS environments.
- Collaborate with DevOps, security, engineering, and data teams to support application deployment and operational stability.
- Continuously evaluate and recommend improvements for infrastructure reliability, cost optimization, and security posture.
Required Skills - ship and active Top-Secret Clearance.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience designing, deploying, and managing AWS cloud infrastructure.
- Strong experience with AWS core services including EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, VPC, Lambda, CloudWatch, and CloudTrail.
- 5+ years of experience using Infrastructure-as-Code (CloudFormation or Terraform).
- Strong understanding of AWS networking (VPC architecture, subnets, routing, security groups, NACLs, NAT gateways).
- 5+ years of Linux system administration experience; comfort navigating and troubleshooting Linux environments.
- Experience implementing cloud security best practices, including IAM policies, encryption (KMS), logging, and compliance controls.
- Experience with automation and scripting (Bash, Python).
- Experience supporting large, complex systems and data sets in cloud environments.
Desired Skills - BS degree in System Engineering, Computer Science, or related IT field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience supporting Federal Government environments (preferably DOJ/FBI).
- Experience in AWS GovCloud environments.
- Experience with container services (ECS, EKS, or Kubernetes).
- Experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitLab, CodePipeline) supporting infrastructure deployments.
- Familiarity with cost optimization strategies (Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, rightsizing).
- Experience implementing compliance frameworks (RMF, ATO, STIG hardening).
- Demonstrated ability to proactively identify, research, and resolve complex infrastructure issues prior to escalation.
- Experience architecting scalable cloud environments and identifying flaws in proposed infrastructure designs.
- Relevant AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, SysOps Administrator).
- Experience working in Agile/DevSecOps environments.
- Experience writing and maintaining design documentation, infrastructure diagrams, SOPs, and operational runbooks.
