About the Team

At the NYC Department of Buildings, we are responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity, efficiency, and professionalism. The Cranes and Derricks (C&D) unit's mission is to ensure that crane and hoisting work in New York City is performed safely as per manufacturer's recommendations and best industry practices while maintaining the requirements of the NYC Construction Codes.

Position Responsibilities

Under the direction and supervision of the Director, Cranes and Derricks, the intern will:
- Learn the code & engineering design requirements for suspended platforms
- Assist the plan examiners in the reviews of suspended scaffold filings
- Prepare lists of objections identified during the review of applications and discuss objections with plan examiners to finalize
- Review re-submissions of suspended scaffold jobs and discuss with plan examiner
- Update spreadsheets for the unit's performance reports

- Undergraduate majoring in Civil or Mechanical Engineering

Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
