Overview

The western energy sector is undergoing rapid and complex transformation driven by regulatory policy, data center growth, technological change, and social and climate forces. In this role, you will help senior leadership and key business partners understand, quantify, and act on uncertainty in an increasingly complex and data-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Power Operations Risk Management teams, including running and analyzing operational reports, collaborating with Power Operations to assess trading risk limits, evaluate exposures, develop new quantitative models, validate or enhance existing models, and support internal partners in applying these models for effective risk analysis and decision-making.
  • Run production reporting processes to ensure smooth and efficient End of Day flows.
  • Troubleshoot production reporting systems and learn to identify, communicate, and track the status of issues when they arise.
  • Suggest improvements to existing operational systems based on knowledge of energy market risk systems and End of Day functions.
  • Provide analytical support for trading, portfolio management, origination, energy market risk, credit risk, and finance by translating qualitative insights from commercial teams into quantitative terms.
  • Learn and support quantitative approaches to evaluate the benefits, costs, risks, and risk-mitigation strategies associated with energy infrastructure.
  • Support new and review existing complex valuation and pricing models for structured products including tolling agreements, PPAs, full-requirements/load-following deals, shaped products, revenue puts, exotic options (swaptions, basket options, look-back options, heat-rate options), weather derivatives, and unit contingency products.
  • Learn, apply, and interpret risk-metric models including Value at Risk (VaR), Mark-to-Market, and Gross Margin at Risk (GMaR).
  • Support statistical analysis and quantitative tools for trading and hedging, including commodity data modeling and ad-hoc analysis based on short-term market developments.
  • Communicate modeling methodologies and results clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences, emphasizing practical business implications and the “why” behind the analysis.
  • Make suggestions in alignment with the existing Risk Management Policy and Procedure framework.

Required Skills

  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and operate effectively in a complex, data-driven environment.
  • Broad experience in North American energy markets with a focus on power, natural gas, and renewables.
  • Advanced knowledge of risk management concepts and quantitative risk analysis.
  • Experience supporting Power Operations Risk Management teams and operational reporting processes.
  • Expertise in at least one of the following: time-series analysis, advanced regression/econometrics, or advanced optimization techniques using commercial solvers.
  • Experience with Production Cost Modeling.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with teams outside of risk management.
  • Strong analytical judgment and the ability to deliver clear, well-structured communications to senior and executive audiences.
  • Utilities industry experience.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, statistics, a scientific discipline, economics, finance, or a related field

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in wholesale power and/or gas markets or quantitative trading.
  • Advanced financial modeling skills using Microsoft Excel, Python, or similar tools.
  • Experience with Endur ETRM.
  • Strong enterprise and business acumen.
  • Expert written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience translating complex contract terms into system-level deal details.
