General Summary

We are seeking an experienced Battery Thermal Modeling Engineer to develop state-of-the-art thermal, CFD, and multiphysics models for battery cells, packs, BMS subsystems, and product-level assemblies. The engineer will work closely with Battery Module, Product Design, Battery Modeling, Cell Engineering, system, test, and reliability teams from early design stages to assess thermal impact, guide design trade-offs, and improve product thermal performance through simulation-driven design changes and mitigations.

Function : Battery Thermal Modeling / CFD & Multiphysics

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop state-of-the-art thermal, CFD, and multiphysics finite-element models for battery cells, packs, BMS subsystems, and system-level assemblies.
  • Provide early-stage design and trade-off guidance for fast charging, high-power functions, product features, and thermal mitigation concepts.
  • Develop models and capabilities to convert electrical power maps into temperature, heat-flow, and thermal-performance outputs.
  • Perform advanced transient thermal/CAE simulations to evaluate boundary conditions at cell, pack, BMS subsystem, battery-pack surroundings, and product-system levels.
  • Use best-in-class solvers and modeling practices to build accurate, robust, and reusable simulation models.
  • Work with test and reliability laboratories to define physical test methods, obtain required material and boundary-condition data, and validate simulation results.
  • Collaborate with system teams to develop detailed thermal sub-models for assembly-level and product-level simulations.
  • Develop optimized workflows, Python automation, and reusable templates for recurring thermal and CFD analyses.
  • Work with CAE vendors to drive functionality improvements that address the group's modeling and simulation needs.
  • Explore new technologies, including AI/ML, surrogate modeling, and digital-twin methods for physics-based simulation.
  • Contribute to simulation-driven design workflows, technical roadmaps, design reviews, and cross-functional engineering decisions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability
Required
  • MS with 8+ years, or PhD with 5+ years, of relevant industry experience.
  • Mechanical or electrical engineering background with strong foundation in thermal/CFD engineering simulations.
  • Expert-level hands-on experience with Ansys Electronics Desktop (AEDT), particularly Icepak, HFSS and SIwave.
  • Experience in transient thermal simulations of assemblies built using MCAD/ECAD inputs
  • Familiarity with lithium-ion batteries used in consumer-electronics products.
  • Experience in electronic heating and cooling and CFD
  • Familiarity with multi-physics coupled modeling, integrating mechanical, thermal and electrochemical behaviors.
  • Experience defining and leading a technical development roadmap.
  • Experience managing engineering teams and coordinating cross-functional technical work.
  • Familiarity with batteries in consumer electronics
Working Conditions

This position is onsite in Cupertino, California, and requires close collaboration with battery, product design, electrical, mechanical, system, test, reliability, and CAE teams. Remote work is not allowed.
