Work Location & Requirements

• Location: Preferred Chicago - In Office Hybrid, otherwise completely remote is acceptable.
• Travel: Some travel to Springfield required.

Role Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Microsoft Purview Technical Lead to design, implement, and manage enterprise data cataloging, classification, lineage, and governance capabilities within an Azure environment.

This role combines Microsoft Purview expertise, data and database knowledge, technical architecture, project delivery, and stakeholder management.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the engagement and serve as the primary point of contact for technical teams, business stakeholders, data owners, and data stewards.
• Manage Agile delivery through Azure DevOps, including planning, weekly status reporting, risks, dependencies, and approvals.
• Coordinate technical review, security, Cloud Operations, and AI Governance activities.
• Design and configure the Microsoft Purview account, Data Map, collection hierarchy, domains, and governance structure.
• Register Azure, on-premises, database, storage, reporting, and other in-scope data sources in Microsoft Purview.
• Configure scan rulesets, full and incremental scan schedules, automated classifications, and sensitivity labels.
• Register and oversee the Self-Hosted Integration Runtime for on-premises and restricted data sources.
• Monitor scan health, troubleshoot connectivity and credential failures, and tune scans to minimize production impact.
• Secure service accounts and scanning credentials using Azure Key Vault.
• Coordinate with Cloud Operations on Microsoft Entra ID groups, managed identities, service principals, and access required for scanning.
• Build and maintain the Microsoft Purview data catalog, data dictionary, and business glossary.
• Document data usage, ownership, size, location, content, classifications, sensitivity, and access requirements.
• Configure and validate automated end-to-end data lineage and document manual lineage where automated capture is unavailable.
• Map business glossary terms, owners, stewards, and classifications to relevant Purview data assets.
• Implement Purview roles, collection-level permissions, RBAC, and persona-based access.
• Define processes for metadata enrichment, catalog validation, glossary approval, stewardship, and ongoing maintenance.
• Develop operational runbooks, scan execution playbooks, configuration documentation, and a scan failure matrix.
• Deliver Microsoft Purview training and knowledge transfer for administrators, data owners, and data stewards.

Required Experience

• Hands-on experience implementing and administering Microsoft Purview.
• Experience configuring Purview collections, Data Map, data sources, scans, classifications, glossary terms, and lineage.
• Strong knowledge of Azure, Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Key Vault, managed identities, and RBAC.
• Experience working with databases, data platforms, metadata, data cataloging, and data governance.
• Experience configuring Self-Hosted Integration Runtime and troubleshooting data source scans.
• Strong technical architecture, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience managing Agile delivery using Azure DevOps.
• Strong communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Experience

• Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Purview, or data governance certifications.
• Experience working in government or regulated environments.
• Familiarity with enterprise data governance and metadata management frameworks.
