Summary

Title: Electronics Lab Test Engineer

Length of Contract: The project duration is an initial 6 months with potential for extension based on the successful ramp of lab volume and funding.

Location: Long Island, NY (Suffolk County)- onsite required

Scope:

Our client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Process Engineer for a strategic 6-month project engagement to lead the physical build-out and operational stand-up of a new electronics testing laboratory in the Long Island, NY area. This role focuses on converting an empty facility into a fully functional, audit-ready environment specialized in component-level testing and counterfeit-risk mitigation. The successful consultant will function as an owner-operator, bridging the gap between facility readiness and technical execution by establishing robust Quality Management Systems, defining standardized workflows, and enabling a technician workforce to deliver repeatable results.

Regarding Specific Initiatives

  • Lab Build-Out and Workflow Design: Overseeing the physical transformation of a "bare" room into a structured lab environment, including the logical layout for receiving, inspection, testing, and disposition.
  • Quality Management System (QMS) Implementation: Strengthening the baseline QMS by developing SOPs, Work Instructions, and Control Plans that ensure traceability and audit readiness.
  • Safety and Environmental Standards: Establishing and verifying ESD controls and creating safe chemical handling protocols for wet/chemical bench processes.
  • Technician Enablement: Developing training materials and competency checklists to ensure technicians can execute processes independently and consistently.
  • Operational Scalability: Building a model that supports current commercial testing while providing a roadmap for future expansion into Automotive, Medical, and Aerospace markets.

Types of Technologies and Solutions

  • ESD Control Infrastructure: Implementation of workstations, grounding systems, and verification routines following ANSI/ESD S20.20 standards.
  • Advanced Inspection Tools: Integration and operationalization of Optical & digital microscopy, optical inspection assets, and future 2D X-ray systems.
  • Chemical/Wet Bench Processing: Setup of safe storage, ventilation, and waste streams for solvent-based cleaning and decapsulation support.
  • Automation Prototypes: Translating existing reel-to-reel automation prototypes into controlled, production-ready processes.
  • Quality Frameworks: Application of MIL-STD-883 concepts and PFMEA methodologies to identify and mitigate process risks.

Main Takeaways

  • The engagement is a hands-on build-out role requiring physical presence on-site in Long Island; it is not a remote or design-only position.
  • This is not an ATE programming role; the focus is on process engineering, layout, and quality systems rather than software development.
  • Candidates must have 10+ years of experience with a proven track record of standing up new lab environments from early-stage conditions.
  • Client Focused on Lab Build-out expertise , Anti-counterfeit testing and inspection methods. such as general and detailed external visual inspection, X-ray, X-ray fluorescence, decapsulation, curve tracing, and boundary scan. MIL-STD 883.
  • Experience writing test plans/procedures and evaluating authenticity and integrity of microelectronics components
  • Well-versed at diagnosing, debugging, and maintaining an electronics lab (including clean space and equipment)
  • Familiarity writing code to perform, or automate, testing and analysis
