Summary
The Mainframe COBOL Programmer will be responsible for designing, developing, enhancing, and supporting mission-critical mainframe applications. This role involves working closely with business analysts and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions, maintaining high standards for application performance, reliability, and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and enhance applications using COBOL, CICS, ADABAS, VSAM, and IBM JCL
- Contribute to complex automated solutions and monitor application performance
- Perform unit and system testing to ensure application quality
- Review business requirements and translate them into technical specifications
- Write technical documentation and complex program code
- Collaborate with business analysts and stakeholders to support functional specifications
- Analyze, debug, and resolve application defects
- Adhere to software development standards for mainframe batch and online processing
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues arising during nightly batch processing
- Provide schedule estimates, technical projections, and detailed work/action plans
- Prepare system problem resolutions and enhancement documentation
Required Technical Knowledge
- COBOL programming (expert level)
- CICS programming
- VSAM and ADABAS databases
- IBM JCL
- Mainframe batch and online processing environments
- ITIL-based application operational support
- SDLC and CMMI-based development methodologies
- IT testing processes and audit procedures
- Software testing tools
- Flowcharts, work plans, and system documentation

Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of hands-on experience as a COBOL programmer
- Proven expertise in enterprise mainframe environments
