Summary

We are seeking a technically disciplined RF Field Technician to support a large-scale utility communications network. This role blends RF troubleshooting, AMI endpoint diagnostics, and field-based network optimization within a regulated utility environment.

This is not a traditional telecom installation role. This position supports mission-critical infrastructure where precision, reliability, and accountability matter.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and maintain RF-based utility communication networks and mesh systems
  • Perform signal strength validation, interference analysis, and spectrum diagnostics
  • Support Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) endpoint connectivity and performance
  • Conduct field calibration and verification of communication equipment
  • Analyze and resolve connectivity issues across meters, collectors, repeaters, and network controllers
  • Utilize spectrum analyzers, signal testing tools, and proprietary diagnostic software
  • Document findings, corrective actions, and network performance metrics
  • Coordinate with utility operations teams and engineering support groups
  • Represent the organization professionally in a subcontractor/client-facing capacity
  • Maintain compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality standards in field operations

Technical Experience We re Targeting

  • Background in electronics, RF communications, instrumentation
  • Ability to learn and work with proprietary software
  • Adept ability and proficiency with Microsoft office
  • Ability to work Independently and collaborate with other teams (internal and external)
  • Experience using spectrum analyzers, site masters, or similar RF diagnostic tools
  • Understanding of signal propagation, interference mitigation, and RSSI/SNR analysis
  • Familiarity with AMI systems, utility meters, SCADA, or field communications infrastructure
  • Experience working in regulated or compliance-driven environments
  • Ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation
  • Strong troubleshooting methodology and root cause analysis capability
  • Comfortable working in outdoor field environments, including elevated structures or bucket trucks when required

Ideal Backgrounds

  • Military communications, signal, avionics, PMEL, or electronics technicians
  • Utility field communications technicians
  • Experience within advanced metering or smart grid communication environments supporting RF mesh networks and utility endpoint infrastructure
  • Calibration and instrumentation technicians transitioning into RF field work
  • Independent field technicians accustomed to operating with limited supervision

Accountabilities

  • On call and may be required to work weekends and holidays as required.
  • Must be able to work wearing safety equipment.
  • Must be able to work in bucket truck and in inclement weather.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma
  • 2 - 5 years of experience
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver s license.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements/Safety/PPE/OHSAS:

Working Conditions: Typical indoor office environment with the majority of time spent sitting and working on a computer using keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Occasional use of other devices such as: phone, copier/printer/fax, etc.

Physical Requirements: Typical office setting. Required to stand; walk; crouch; or handle objects. Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Ability to sit and view computer screen for long periods of time. The ability to see, hear, & speak in English. Reasonable accommodation provided for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Personal Protection Equipment/Other OHSAS-18001 Safety Requirements: Ensure the continued efforts and assist in achieving annual goals of health, safety, and environmental policies. Must be current with available OSHA/Safety Training provided by the Company. If required, must be able to work while wearing safety equipment such as hard hats, work boats, gloves, hearing protection, and others.
